John O’Shea’s in-form five-year-old Medcaut is one of the top early fancies among the Carrington Stakes 2016 nominations for Sydney’s Royal Randwick meeting this weekend.
Nominations for this summer’s $150,000 Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) have been extended by the Australian Turf Club (ATC) until 11:00am (AEST) on Tuesday with just eight early entries taken for the handicap clash on Saturday.
Of the original nominees the sole last start winner is the Godolphin-raced son of Commands, Medcaut.
If accepted the gelding will be shooting for his third win on the trot following back-to-back wins at the track in December including a narrow win over Monton in the December Handicap (1600m) back on Boxing Day last time out.
O’Shea dominates the current Carrington Stakes nominations numbers wise with three entries.
Medcaut is joined by stablemates Barbed and Sarajevo who both come off well-beaten lead-up runs.
Canny Lad five-year-old Barbed was 11th when beating home just one other runner home in Flemington’s Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) in Melbourne on New Year’s Day.
Nicely-bred Lonhro four-year-old Sarajevo meanwhile ran just last weekend also at Flemington in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) when eighth, again second last past the post, behind 2016 Australia Stakes hope Tudor.
Veteran of the Carrington Stakes nominees this summer is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Agent.
The eight-year-old son of Pins has had 43 starts to date for six wins, but hasn’t won since March last year over 1100m at Bendigo and hasn’t been in black-type company since his fourth to Unanimously in the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m) at Scone in May of 2014.
Team Hawkes won the Carrington Stakes last year with Ninth Legion (2015) who returned to racing in the event having run fourth to He’s Your Man in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at the track the previous October.
The top-rated of the hopefuls is the Gerald Ryan-trained Excites six-year-old Red Excitement who is out to atone for a last start 15th to Happy Clapper in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at the track back on December 12.
He has won three from six at the Randwick track and is six from 10 over Saturday’s distance however looking to return to the form that saw him win last year’s Chester Manifold 12 months ago.
Gosford’s Gordon Yorke has entered in-form six-year-old Hidden Warrior whose last run produced a close fourth to Howmuchdoyouloveme in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at his home track.
Hidden Warrior jumped a $21 chance in that January 8 run and was defeated under two lengths, the step up to 1400m to suit this weekend with the gelding boasting a two-from-four record over the increased distance.
