Running as Race 7 at 4:06pm (AEST), there are nine runners in this summer’s $120,000 Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m).

The best in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the full field this Saturday, paying $3.90 to break a year long drought is the John O’Shea-trained four-year-old son of Lonhro Sarajevo.

He jumps from the outside alley (9) with ace hoop Craig Williams in the saddle again and is tipped to stay out of trouble from the gate after his failed eighth down the Flemington straight in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) on New Year’s Day.

In an open market the next two shortest priced hopes are Kylie Vella’s Standish Handicap runner-up Zupacharged ($4) having just his second black-type run on the weekend and the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained market mover Tried And Tired ($4.60) coming off a fourth in the same lead-up.

So are the first three in betting the ones to back or is there an upset Chester Manifold Stakes result on the cards from the likes of Peter Moody’s classy mare Noela’s Choice ($7) or Canterbury Classic runner-up Dances On Stars ($7) for last year’s winning trainer Gerald Ryan?

#8 Zupacharged ($4)

Ballarat-based six-year-old Zupacharged may have had just one stakes start to date but it was a beauty down the Flemington straight when runner-up beaten under a length in the Group 3 Standish Handicap. Down in class this weekend, against a smaller field and up to 1400m that he has winning form over. Will be improving off the last run, well-weighted and apprentice Harry Coffey knows the horse. In flying form and could be hard to hold off if he runs over them late off a good run.

#2 Tried And Tired ($4.60)

Plenty of boxes ticked by last year’s Chester Manifold Stakes runner-up who was beaten by the barest of margins in the race 12 months ago. He goes up to 58.5kg this weekend and that is the test, but the money is coming and it could be worth following. Top local jockey Mark Zahra stays on and the bend will work in the horse’s favour who has a good record over 1400m (11-3-3-1). He’s had the ideal preparation this time in and only need a touch of luck for a run with cover from the gate.

#5 General Groove ($9)

Think there’s value in the other Corstens-trained runner, the six-year-old a previous winner at the track and form with Group 3 form around Group 1 winner Pornichet. He’s proven at Flemington (3-1-1-0) and has won over the distance. Last run was a fifth in the Listed X’Mas Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day, he’s had the freshen-up and should be better suited here after being beaten only two lengths that run.
