Sydney’s Gerald Ryan will shoot for successive victories in Saturday’s Chester Manifold Stakes 2016 saddling-up this summer’s top weight in the Flemington clash Dances On Stars.
Last Melbourne Summer Racing Carnival the Rosehill-based Ryan won the $120,000 Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) with Red Excitement, the handicap clash attracting a final field of just nine middle distance sprinters this season.
To wear the number one saddlecloth and carry the 59kg top weight is Ryan’s Snitzel six-year-old Dances On Stars who shoots for his first win since the 2014 Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) a year and a half back.
His lead-up run into Saturday was a close second when under half a length off the winning mare Cradle Me in Randwick’s Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) on Boxing Day.
He travels to Melbourne this weekend for the first time since November of 2012 with Damien Oliver to ride Dances On Stars from barrier seven.
Following in the Chester Manifold Stakes weights this year is the classy Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Tried And Tired (58.5kg) in gate eight with local hoop Mark Zahra in the saddle.
The Niello six-year-old is third-up on the weekend on the back of a nice fourth when a length off Durendal in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at the same track on New Year’s Day.
He has a solid 1400m record of three wins, three seconds and a third form 11 runs but is also out to break a notable winning drought not having won since Boxing Day of 2014 when taking out Sandown’s Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m).
The Corstens are also represented in the race by General Nediym gelding General Groove who was last seen running fifth only two lengths off Tuscan Sling in the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on December 26.
Also coming off a nice lead-up run into the Chester Manifold this January is the Kylie Vella-trained Ballarat galloper Zupacharged, the six-year-old coming off back-to-back placings at the track.
Two back he ran third to Durendal on December 12 before his second to the same horse in the Standish with apprentice Harry Coffey retaining the ride this weekend for the gelding’s black-type debut.
The rails run in the clash belongs to the Pat Carey-trained Kareeming who returns to racing on the weekend.
A five-year-old son of Nadeem, Kareeming hasn’t run since his disappointing 10th to The Offer in the Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m) back in October that followed his second in the Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m).
He is right down in distance for his first-up assignment and shoots for his first top three finish over 1400m.
Other notable hopes in the line-up include Doug Harrison’s four-year-old Strategic stallion Tudor in gate two on the 54kg light weight and the John O’Shea-trained Lonhro four-year-old Sarajevo who is yet to win over further than 1200m.
