Conchita Also Out Of Magic Millions Classic

Conchita has been ruled out of the 2016 Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast tomorrow after a veterinary examination found her to be lame in her off hind leg.

Racing Queensland stewards announced yesterday afternoon that Conchita would undergo a further veterinary examination before she would be cleared to contest the Magic Millions Classic and a Racing Queensland vet was not satisfied that the Uncle Mo filly had recovered; declaring that she was still 3/5 lame.

Conchita made her racing debut with an impressive victory in the Antler Luggage Kirkham Plate (1000m) at Royal Randwick on October 10, but she failed to finish the Wyong Magic Millions Classic on December 17 and she was found to be lame after the race.

The scratching of Conchita as well as the earlier scratching of Sundance means that Gerry Harvey-trained Zafina will now run in the $2 million event.

Zafina made her racing debut with a second place finish behind Conchita in the Antler Luggage Kirkham Plate and she was sent to the spelling paddock after she beat home just a single runner in the Pierro Plate (1100m) at Royal Randwick on October 24.

The Stratum filly performed well in a barrier trial over 809 metres at Warwick Farm on December 18 and she finished a credible second behind My Country in the Berowra Cricket Club Maiden Plate (1000m) at Gosford on December 29, but owner Gerry Harvey believes that she has no chance in the 2016 Magic Millions Classic.

Trainer Gary Portelli did not originally plan to bring Zafina to the Gold Coast after she originally missed out on a place in the Magic Millions Classic field, but he was informed by Racing Queensland stewards yesterday that he should float the filly to the Gold Coast yesterday.

“They just rung and said ‘when will your filly be arriving?’ Portelli told News Limited.

“I said ‘I don’t think I’m bringing it’ and they then replied, ‘I think you better put it on a truck’ and I told them it will be here at seven o’clock in the morning.”

Zafina has joined fellow emergency Rainy Day Woman as the extreme outsider in the 2016 Magic Millions Classic with Ladbrokes, while Capitalist ($1.70) remains a dominant favourite from Nikitas ($11), Niccolance ($11) and Zelady’s Night Out ($13).

If you think that Zafina can score a Prince Of Penzance style upset in the Melbourne Cup then you can claim the best odds with leading online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au.
