The first of the $1 million support acts on the Gold Coast Magic Millions Racing Carnival card this Saturday is the Magic Millions QTIS Open Plate 2016 where Buffering is odds-on favourite for the win.

Due to run as Race 3 at 12:50pm this year’s $1 million Magic Millions QTIS Open Plate (1300m) features a field of 14 led by Robert Heathcote’s six-time Group 1 winning eight-year-old Buffering.

The son of Mossman, last seen winning Perth’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at his 50th career start back in November, sits top of the odds at the shortest price of the day – $1.25 through Ladbrokes.com.au where you can lock in Best Tote or SP + 20% on every Gold Coast race on Saturday!

The evergreen champion is a class above his 13 rivals here no doubt and is weighted accordingly with 61kg.

He is also out wide in barrier 11 for regular rider Damian Browne, but that hasn’t stopped the bookies pricing him as a sure thing.

Still this is his first ever Gold Coast run and he has never won over further than 1200m so an upset isn’t beyond the realm of possibility despite what the Magic Millions QTIS Open Plate odds suggest.

No other runner in the line-up is under $10 for the win but the next best in betting are Steel Zip ($12) out to atone for his last in the Lough Neagh Stakes in Brisbane, the Tony Gollan-trained Gundy Spirit ($14) who gets the run of the race from barrier one and the early market mover Anymore ($16) coming off an Ipswich win over easier company.

So can Buffering get the job done once again and salute at the short price or will the track and distance prove too much under those kilos?

1st

#4 Gundy Spirit ($14)

We are tipping the upset with Gollan’s Jet Spur five-year-old getting the luck with the inside alley and the booking of top class Sydney hoop James McDonald. It has been a while between drinks for the gelding but the 1300m is the right distance (10-4-2-0) despite his 12th to Bachman in the Goldmarket here last time out. He was held-up that run and was in good form before that with a George Moore second and Lough Neagh fourth at home, form he can return to on the weekend.

2nd

#1 Buffering ($1.25)

The price is just too short despite all the claims of this grand old campaigner. Despite his age Heathcote’s $5.8 million earner keeps posting top level wins and handles a tight track proven most recently at Moonee Valley with the Moir Stakes success. He’s never started at the Gold Coast however and only has winning form up to 1200m during his 50-start career to date. He gives the weight away, has a double digit gate to overcome and while he’s the deserving favourite $1.25 is too much of a risk.

3rd

#6 Siegfried ($21)

Local Toby Edmonds-trained five-year-old who was runner-up over 1400m at the track on Boxing Day by a narrow margin carrying 59kg with Browne in the saddle. This Saturday Brenton Avdulla has the mount and the horse drops two kilograms. Has barrier 13 to overcome, but was only just run down last start and over 100m less he’ll be on speed and hard to run down.

You’re joking right? Saying Buffering hasn’t raced at Gold Coast is a negative then pick a horse that’s never won at the track from 4 goes. Last start finished 12th same track and distance. You then point out Buffering hasn’t won beyond 1200. He’s still placed 5 times from 7 attempts all at Group 1 level. How would Gundy Spirit go in a Doomben 10,000?
