Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A capacity field of gallopers face off in Saturday’s Magic Millions Cup 2016 as part of Australia’s richest day of racing at the Gold Coast and below are our insider betting tips on the handicap clash.
Set to run as the Gold Coast Race 6 at 2:35pm, this year’s $1 million Jewel Magic Millions Cup (1400m) markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, where you’ll find Best Tote or SP + 20% on all the Gold Coast races on Saturday, are led by Darren Weir’s 60.5kg top weight Lucky Hussler.
Despite his hefty weight allocation the dual Group 1 winning Husson six-year-old is $4.20 favourite in the Magic Millions Cup odds with Glen Boss aboard in barrier nine.
The record shows this gelding is a star galloper on his day, but he has the weight to overcome as well as a number of disruptions to his lead-up including missing the run in the Lough Neagh due to injury.
Three other hopes are under double figures in the latest Magic Millions Cup betting markets including Bachman ($6) who has the gun form but the wide gate 14 draw.
Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride on the flying Gerald Ryan-trained All American four-year-old who shoots for his third straight win and was last seen taking out the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast on Boxing Day.
He did it from barrier five with 54kg that day and while the minimum weight is his to enjoy again on Saturday, he’ll need luck from the gate.
Rounding out the single figure fancies at $8.50 each are then Open Book and Murt The Flirt drawn at opposite ends of field with barriers 19 and one respectively.
Joe Pride’s Shamardal five-year-old Open Book comes off back-to-back Rosehill wins including his two length effort carrying 60.5kg just last Saturday over 1400m.
He gets the same distance again here, which he has a top record over with two wins and a second from three starts, and drops right back to only 54kg so just the gate holds him back.
Murt The Flirt will have no issues from barrier one with Chris Symons staying on the Brendan McCarthy-trained Murtajill four-year-old from Melbourne.
The gelding has run top three in his three most recent runs including behind Flippant in the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes last time out from barrier 11 with 59kg last month.
So can the top fancies get the job done for the punters or is there an upset Magic Millions Cup result pending from the likes of Wyong Magic Millions Stakes fourth placed Illustrious Lad ($11), Tony Gollan’s Lough Neagh Stakes winner Fontelina ($13) or the Chris Waller-trained Strawberry Boy ($13) from gate two this Queensland Summer Racing Carnival?
#5 Bachman ($6)
Ryan’s in-form gelding has a nasty barrier to overcome but tipping his class and top lead-up efforts to help him still get the job done and extend the winning streak to three. He won over 1200m at Randwick two back before his Gold Coast black-type win on December 26. McEvoy stays on, he should be peaking three runs in, was runner-up in last year’s Queensland Guineas and at his best can salute.
#13 Murt The Flirt ($8.50)
Nice interstate lead-up from this progressive four-year-old including the Wyong Magic Millions Stakes third on December 17. Carried 59kg from gate 11 that day and will be flashing home on just 54kg from the inside alley this weekend.
#1 Lucky Hussler ($4.20)
Weir’s favourite is a Group 1 winner and deserving favourite, but needs to be at his best off a bit of an injury enforced break with these kilos. Has a good raw and Boss is in the saddle, has winning form at the distance and was doing very well in the spring so setback and weight aside is still a winning hope for the punters.
