The Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2016 takes centre stage at the Gold Coast Racecourse in Queensland on Saturday with the unbeaten Peter & Paul Snowden-trained colt Capitalist the bookies tip to win.
The son of Written Tycoon came up trumps with barrier two in the capacity field for this summer’s $2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m), the lucrative Restricted Listed clash due to jump as Gold Coast Race 8 at 3:55pm.
Capitalist won the Listed Breeders Plate by three lengths on debut at Randwick last October before coming back to breeze past his rivals with a win by a similar margin in the Wyong Magic Millions Classic on December 17.
Those efforts, his ability to handle all track conditions, the rebooking of jockey Blake Shinn and the draw all combine to have Capitalist as the $1.75 favourite in Magic Millions Classic betting at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% across the card on Saturday!
So can the class horse and only single figure hope get the job done or is there value in tipping an upset from the widely-drawn BJ McLachlan winner at the track on Boxing Day Zelady’s Night Out ($10) or early market mover Nikitas ($10) who comes off a third to Tony Gollan’s filly in the same December 26 lead up?
#1 Capitalist ($1.75)
Capitalist is shorter than any Magic Millions Classic favourite in recent history but it is a deserving price and with the Best Tote or SP + 20% offer at Ladbrokes.com.au on Saturday is still worth having a punt on. He is building an early career record reminiscent of Sepoy and can make it three from three this weekend after drawing a stellar alley in barrier two. Shinn knows the horse and is on the best one in this race by far so don’t look past the favourite.
#7 Just Orm ($16)
Just Orm is on a short back-up having scored an impressive win at the Sunshine Coast just last Saturday and if this son of Falvelon handles the quick turnaround he is a livewire hope to finish in the money. He had a gifted run from the inside alley last weekend and is drawn nicely again with barrier eight this Saturday with top hoop Tommy Berry, who won back-to-back editions of the race with Karuta Queen (2011) and Driefontein (2012), boosting his chances here.
#10 Zelady’s Night Out ($10)
Tony Gollan’s other runner didn’t fare as well with the MM Classic barriers out very wide, but she is all class and continues to live up to the hype. She took out the Group 3 lead-up on Boxing Day without a worry proving her ability at the tight Gold Coast track and if she gets a run without interference with Jim Byrne retaining the ride she can close late and do a good job from a bad gate.
