2016 Magic Millions Cup Field Features Bachman

Gerald Ryan’s Goldmarket Handicap winner at the track last time out Bachman returns to the Gold Coast Racecourse this weekend for a tough test in the Magic Millions 2016 Cup.

The All American four-year-old from Sydney had his second Gold Coast run on Boxing Day and enjoyed success in the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) on the back of a 1200m win at Randwick where he carted a hefty 61kg to victory.

This Saturday he lines-up in the $1 million Jewel Magic Millions Cup (1400m), the handicap clash attracted a capacity field of 16 starters plus four emergencies.

Bachman gets in on the 54kg minimum for the Gold Coast Race 6 at 2:35pm, but has a wide barrier 14 draw for jockey Kerrin McEvoy to overcome.

Heading this summer’s Magic Millions Cup weights with 60.5kg is the Darren Weir-trained Lucky Hussler in gate nine with Glen Boss to ride.

Boss chases a second win in the race after guiding Walking Or Dancing to victory in 2010 and stays on Husson six-year-old Lucky Hussler for the 12th straight time.

He was aboard for the horse’s Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) second and Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) win in November 2014 and March 2015 as well as his second elite level success in last October’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).

A minor injury prevented Lucky Hussler from having a lead-up run in Brisbane heading into the Magic Millions Cup, but Weir is confident the galloper is fit enough for a big performance in his fifth Gold Coast appearance.

The next heaviest weighted in Saturday’s Restricted Listed showdown is the Tony Gollan-trained Fontelina (57kg) who also suffered a blow drawing out in gate 18 for veteran Queensland jockey Jim Byrne.

Byrne was aboard on 58.5kg for the Testa Rossa seven-year-old’s lead-up win in the Listed Lough Neagh Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on December 12 and for his third in the run before in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m).

Along with Bachman and Fontelina the other last start winners in the field are the Joe Pride-trained Open Book and Testashadow for fellow Sydney horseman Gary Portelli drawn in barriers 19 and 10 respectively.

Brenton Avdulla replaces Sam Clipperton in the saddle of in-form Shamardal five-year-old Open Book who comes off back-to-back Rosehill wins with big weights.

He raced only last Saturday and carried 60.5kg to a tidy two length victory over 1400m, the gelding set to relish the drop back to the 54kg minimum that will help with the wide alley.

Testashadow also gets in on 54kg, the progressive four-year-old a Randwick winner over 1400m carrying 59kg on Boxing Day.

Last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Cup winner Spurtonic is back to defend his title having since transferred from Gai Waterhouse to former Gold Coast-based Bryan Guy who is now based at Canungra.

Six-year-old Spurtonic hasn’t raced since late August and hasn’t finished in the money since his MM Cup win 12 months ago when carrying 58.5kg, a weight he drops four kilos from for the title defence this weekend.

Other notable Magic Millions Cup hopes include recent Razor Sharp Handicap runner-up in Sydney Aussies Love Sport, Robert Heathcote’s Lough Neagh runner-up at Doomben Saluter coming off a Goldmarket fourth from December 26, runner-up in the same Gold Coast lead-up Le Val and third past the post in the Wyong Magic Millions Stakes on December 17 Murt The Flirt.
