Just seven final acceptances were taken for this year’s $150,000 Listed Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup (2100m), the handicap clash due to jump as Race 6 at 6:28pm (AEST) on Friday evening.

Drawn the rails with barrier one and Kerrin McEvoy riding is one of two Waterhouse-trained runners in the mix, flying Danewin four-year-old Kontiki Dane.

A winner of two of her past four starts and second in her other two most recent runs, she is up in black-type company for the first time having earned the assignment with a win at Rosehill over 1900m on December 19.

She did that from gate 11 of 12 carrying 57kg and will relish a smaller field, inside barrier and drop down to the new 56kg minimum after Gosford Gold Cup weights were raised two kilograms.

Leading the weights is Waterhouse’s other runner, Pheidon (58kg), jumping from barrier five with Tommy Berry the fourth hoop in as many runs to ride the Al Maher gelding.

Five-year-old Pheidon has winning form up to 2040m, but hasn’t won a race since May of last year.

His five efforts since have been disappointing including a last start eighth to Medcaut over the Randwick mile on Boxing Day carrying 59.5kg.

The other heaviest weighted runners in this summer’s Gosford Gold Cup field are the Chris Waller-trained Telepathic and Joe Pride’s Destiny’s Kiss both allocated 57.5kg and drawn in gates four and six respectively.

Former Kiwi Telepathic won the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill in late November before the five-year-old Mossman mare ran sixth in Randwick’s Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) and sixth again as the beaten odds-on favourite in the same December 26 lead-up that produces Pheidon.

She is tipped to relish a step back up in distance after her two mile runs and has an ace hoop in Damien Oliver booked for the ride.

Waller also has Dances Of Heroes in the mix on 56kg in barrier three with Glyn Schofield in the saddle of the five-year-old who ran third to Loophole over 1900m at Rosehill just last Saturday carrying 58.5kg and third to Kontiki Dane before that with a hefty 60.5kg on his back.

Destiny’s Kiss meanwhile has Jason Collett retaining the ride on Friday after he rode the Power Of Destiny seven-year-old to a close third when beaten just a long neck by Medcaut over 1600m at Royal Randwick late last month.

Rounding out the Gosford Gold Cup field this season are the Kris Lees-trained Award Season (2) who is proven up to 2400m and Dream Folk (7) who won his only other Gosford start back in October of 2013.
