Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Fred Cowell’s local galloper Mighty Lucky is the headline early entry for Friday’s Gosford Gold Cup 2016, one of three black-type races highlighting the card on January 8 at the track.
The six-year-old Casino Prince gelding is the top-rated of the 10 nominations taken for this summer’s $150,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m), entries for which have been extended until 11am (AEST) on Tuesday morning.
Mighty Lucky comes off a string of good spring – summer runs around Sydney including two black-type wins.
In late November he took out the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill before a fifth when beaten just over two lengths by saluting favourite Happy Clapper in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on December 12.
Last start he raced in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) back at Randwick on Boxing Day and enjoyed a commanding two and a quarter length win over Junoob in the December 26 feature.
He has had three previous runs at his home track at Gosford, but is yet to run top three, something Cowell hopes the horse can atone for with a Gosford Cup win this week.
There are two other last start winners in the mix currently with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kontiki Dane and Loophole for Sydney’s best Chris Waller.
Four-year-old Danewin mare Kontiki Dane has run top two in her four most recent runs going back to early November including her narrow last start win over 1900m at Rosehill on December 19 ahead of her Gosford debut.
Waterhouse has also nominated for Al Maher five-year-old Pheidon, winner of the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley back in March of 2014 who is Group 1 performed but who hasn’t won since May last year over the Warwick Farm mile in the wet.
Loophole meanwhile is one of three Waller-trained Gosford Cup nominations, the Lonhro six-year-old coming off a 1900m Rosehill win from last Saturday.
Waller’s other early entries are in-form Danehill Dancer gelding Dance Of Heroes and former New Zealand-trained mare Telepathic.
Five-year-old Dance Of Heroes comes off two thirds over the 1900m at Rosehill beaten by fellow Gosford Cup hopes Kontiki Dane and stablemate Loophole respectively.
Telepathic is a five-year-old daughter of Mossman who won the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) three back in late November.
She has since run sixth in both the Villiers Stakes and another 1600m Randwilck race on Boxing Day as the beaten odds-on favourite, form she is looking to bounce back from on Friday if accepted.
Also nominated for the 2100m clash is Joe Pride’s evergreen seven-year-old Destiny’s Kiss coming off a third to Medcaut in the same Randwick race that produces Telepathic.
