Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller will saddle-up two runners in Saturday’s Summer Cup 2015 shooting for his third consecutive win in the Royal Randwick Boxing Day feature.
Despite the Australian Turf Club (ATC) extending nominations for this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m), the December 26 feature has attracted a final field of just seven hopefuls.
Sitting top of the field and weights with a hefty 61kg allocation is Waller’s in-form Haafhd eight-year-old Junoob.
The gelding comes off a November 21 win in the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) and shoots for his seventh win from 16 starts over 2000m.
He carried 60kg to victory in the Ballarat Cup and has had a Randwick trial over 1200m since on December 15 to prepare for the Summer Cup showdown where he jumps from barrier six with Blake Shinn aboard.
Waller has won the past two editions of the Summer Cup with his Irish import I’m Imposing, the now 10-year-old to have his racing swansong shooting for a historic third straight win in the weekend’s classic.
Drawn the outside alley with barrier seven and Tommy Berry to ride, the veteran son of Danehill Dancer isn’t in quite the same form as last summer when he ran second in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) before successfully defending his Summer Cup title.
This year he ran 12th to Happy Clapper in the Villiers over the mile on December 12, but will appreciate the extra metres this weekend back up to 2000m for the first time since his third to Complacent in the Group 3 Craven Plate from early October.
Drawn better in gate two for jockey Kathy O’Hara is the Fred Cowell-trained Mighty Lucky, the Casino Prince six-year-old also a Villiers Stakes graduate having run a brave fifth to the saluting favourite as a $21 shot.
He is yet to finish in the money at Randwick and hasn’t raced over 2000m before, so with winning form only up to 1500m to date the step up in distance for Saturday is his test.
Two back Mighty Lucky won the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill defeating a classy field however so he is a definite chance if he handles the metres in the Summer Cup.
The sole last start winner in the line-up is the Allan Kehoe-trained Wyong galloper Get On The Grange, the six-year-old saluting in a Benchmark 72 over 1900 at Canterbury on December 11.
He is up in grade for this but gets the rails run from barrier one and drops from his 56.5kg winning weight last time out to the 54kg minimum on Saturday.
Also coming off a nice lead-up run is the Bjorn Baker-trained Sebrina, a late entry into the handicap clash.
Brenton Avdulla returns to the saddle of the four-year-old Sebring mare after Christian Reith rode her to a narrow second when just nosed out by Kontiki Dane over 1900m at Rosehill for her December 19th second place.
She carried 60kg that day and will be flying with just 54kg on her back in the Group 3 on Saturday that Ladbrokes.com.au will be offering the best betting markets and promos on.
Rounding out the field are then the John Sargent-trained eight-year-old Banksters Bonus who has twice run third from three previous Randwick assignments and Mick Dwyer’s Broadmeadow-based Dane Fever four-year-old Kiseki Dane.
