Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Brisbane’s leading trainer for the season Tony Gollan will shoot for another win in Saturday’s Goldmarket Handicap 2015 at the Gold Coast accepting for three gallopers including Fontelina.
Due to run as Race 9 at 4:55pm (QLD time) as the card closer on Boxing Day in Queensland, this summer’s $100,000 Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) features a capacity field of 16 starters plus six emergency runners.
Heading the line-up and the Goldmarket Handicap weights with 60kg is Gollan’s last start Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) winner at Doomben, Testa Rossa seven-year-old Fontelina.
A fortnight ago the gelding carried 58.5kg to a one and three quarter length win in the black-type over similar distance on the back of a third in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m).
Now the galloper looks to continue his good 1300m form with a fourth win from seven runs over the distance in his Gold Coast debut from a wide gate 16 draw with Jim Byrne retaining the ride.
Gollan won last season’s Goldmarket Handicap with Gundy Sun and seeks back-to-back victories having also accepted for Jet Spur five-year-old Gundy Spirit and High Esteem.
Gundy Spirit was runner-up in the George Moore two back and fourth in the Lough Neagh, the gelding having his fourth Gold Coast run on Saturday where he last lined-up to finish third to Neo in the Listed Prime Ministers Cup (1400m) in late April.
Following Fontelina in the weights are the Pat Duff-trained Steel Zip (57.5kg) and Chris Waller’s Sydney visitor Heart Testa (57kg) who is also accepted for the Canterbury Classic in Sydney on Saturday.
Canadian Silver eight-year-old Steel Zip won three on the trot at Doomben including the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) in mid-November before things went a miss when dead last beaten over 17 lengths in the Lough Neagh last time out.
Another in-form hope in the mix is the now Peter Robl-trained Aussies Love Sport who Glyn Schofield is down to ride from a double digit gate.
The Redoute’s Choice five-year-old is second-up on the weekend and comes off a close second to Cradle Me in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Randwick from December 12.
Real Surreal was also runner-up first-up last time out in black-type company, Kelso Wood’s Real Saga mare beaten a length by Slots in the Listed Just Now Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on December 5.
There the five-year-old carried 59kg and while she drops to the 54kg minimum this weekend, has drawn the third widest gate in the large field for Michael Cahill to overcome.
Drawn the opposite end of the field with the inside alley is Robert Heathcote’s Commands six-year-old Saluter who has winning form at the track and comes off a second to Fontelina in the Lough Neagh where he also had barrier one.
Other notable Goldmarket Handicap chances in 2015 include the Kelly Doughty-trained local mare Little Brown Horse who won Doomben’s Listed Arcade Classic (1200m) last month and Heathcote’s other acceptor Joba coming off a big three-year-old win at home two weeks ago.
