The imported Danehill Dancer gelding broke a lengthy winning drought back on Boxing Day in 2013 to salute in his first Sydney success beating home Travolta narrowly in that year’s $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m).

He then successfully defended his title on December 26 last season this time beating home Midsummer Sun by three quarters of a length in the handicap clash.

Without another win since the ageing galloper runs in his third consecutive Summer Cup on Saturday looking to make history with a hat-trick in the staying clash.

The race was first run in 1890 and in that time there have been only four dual Summer Cup winners including I’m Imposing who was the first to go back-to-back in the Randwick classic since Donald (1928-29).

Waller has three of the 13 Summer Cup nominations this year with his stablemates Junoob (61kg), I’m Imposing (59kg) and Telepathic (55kg) heading the entries.

I’m Imposing has lots of work to do if he is to improve on a 12th to Happy Clapper last start in Randwick’s Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) from December 12, a mile lead-up he was second in 12 months ago.

He is set to appreciate the step back up to 2000m however with his last run at the distance being a nice third to Complacent in the Group 3 Craven Plate back on October 3.

Saturday’s top weight did it tough in the Villiers this summer from a wide barrier 17 of 20 draw and Waller is sweating on a better barrier for his final career run this weekend.

The horse has had 46 starts for seven wins, eight seconds and seven thirds to date for $667,165 in prize money.

“This will be his last race,” Waller confirmed to AAP this week.

“I’m hoping he can improve and go out on a good note.

“He doesn’t have a new home yet but we will find him a good one. We always do.”

Waller’s two other runners come off better lead-up form into the Summer Cup showdown including Haafhd eight-year-old Junoob who was last seen winning the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) back on November 21.

The third of the Waller hopefuls is five-year-old Mossman mare Telepathic who won the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) over this distance at Rosehill two back before her Villiers Stakes sixth from barrier 18 of 20.

After originally drawing just 10 entries the ATC extended Summer Cup nominations leading to three new hopefuls with the Bjorn Baker-trained Sebring mare Sebrina, Tim Martin’s last Start Villiers Stakes fourth placed Husson six-year-old Moral Victory and Felix Bay for Jim and Greg Lee.

Four-year-old Sebrina comes off a close second to Kontiki Dane from Rosehill over 1900m last Saturday when carrying 60kg, a weight she shaves six kilos off for her seven day back-up into the Summer Cup where she gets in on the 54kg minimum.

The 2015 Summer Cup field and barrier draw is announced on Wednesday morning.
