Greyt Start to Magic Millions 2YO Classic Bid

Toowoomba trainer Michael Nolan is hoping a wide barrier draw for his smart filly Greyt Start at Doomben Racecourse this weekend won’t put an end to her 2016 Magic Millions 2YO Classic bid at the Gold Coast next month.

The two-year-old daughter of Captain Sonador kicked off her career in late September at home showing blistering speed with a runaway 7.3 length victory over 1000m to defeat A Snip Of Captain and Stride Of Pride.

This weekend she travels to Brisbane on Bernborough Handicap Day taking on 11 other juveniles in Doomben Race 2 at 12:30pm (QLD time) – the $65,000 Hamilton Hotel QTIS Two-Years-Old Handicap (1100m).

The markets at, home of Best Tote or SP + 20% on the Doomben Listed feature this Saturday, are currently led by Tony Gollan’s unraced galloper Just Orm ($2.30) in barrier 10.

One on his outside is the speedy Greyt Start ($4.80), to be ridden by apprentice Matthew McGillivray making a claim down to 53kg, who will be out to cross and take up front running along with fellow winner on debut last time out Rothabye from the outside alley.

Just Orm is a $17 chance in all-in Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting, firmly led by Thursday’s Wyong MM Classic winner Capitalist ($2), while proven performer Greyt Start is at longer odds paying $26 for next month’s restricted feature.

Her debut was certainly impressive and Nolan hopes she can repeat the feat in tougher company in Brisbane on Saturday, but admitted the wide barrier draw was a bit of a blow.

She likely needs to win and collet the $41,600 first prize however to add to the $40,500 she collected for her first turf triumph if she is to secure a spot in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic field at the Gold Coast on January 9.

“At this stage she will go around on Saturday and have to run one, two or three for us to press on to the Millions,” Nolan told AAP.

“If she can’t be top three, even from this barrier, there isn’t much point in chasing the big race. There are plenty of other races around for her.”

The other two single figure hopes in Saturday’s race are the rails-drawn Heart Skipt A Beat ($6) for Liam Birchley and the market mover Dieters backed in from $10 to $8 who enjoyed a win over 1050m at the track back in October.

Greyt Start is the sole Doomben runner for Nolan in Brisbane this weekend.
