2016 Magic Millions Guineas for Wyong Winner Flippant

Peter & Paul Snowden further secured their hand for next month’s Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day at Wyong Racecourse on Thursday with Magic Millions Guineas-bound filly Flippant taking out the 2015 Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes.

The three-year-old daughter of Hinchinbrook won back-to-back winter races including the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) at Doomben in June before things went amiss for her in the Listed BR Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

In that October 17 run she failed to beat home any runners crossing a well beaten ninth behind Counterattack in an uncharacteristic run.

Post-race she was found to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia, which she quickly recovered from proving her fitness with two nice Sydney trials in November and December.

“It was totally out of character for her,” co-trainer Peter Snowden said of her last run post-Thursday’s return to winning form.

“She had been super honest in every start she’s had and we found the problem straight after.”

She won the last of those hit-outs at Warwick Farm at the start of the month by four and a half lengths, blistering form Flippant brought to the Wyong races on Thursday in the $100,000 Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m).

Drawn wide in gate nine of 11, Kerrin McEvoy stayed aboard off the two lead-up trials and gave her a patient ride deep with cover in the set weights sprint.

Short-priced favourite and market mover Flamboyant Lass ($2.70) drove up along the rails soon after the jump from barrier one to take up the front running.

Her early burst saw her take the lead from Positive Charge while the Brendan McCarthy-trained last start Ballarat Magic Millions winner Murt The Flirt settled into third from the outside barrier.

Flamboyant Lass set a solid pace up front but was being tested by the turn for home by Bryce Heys’ Charge Forward filly Positive Charge.

After racing at the back throughout, Bjorn Baker’s previously undefeated Startum filly Egyptian Symbol hooked to the outside on the straight and charged for the leaders.

Four-year-old Murt The Flirt briefly hit the front but the gelding couldn’t hold off the fast finishing Flippant who raced up and drew clear to win after racing deep with the benefit of cover throughout.

She held a solid margin over the eye-catching runner-up Egyptian Symbol ($4.40) who was up in class while Murt The Flirt ($6.50) held for third after a tough run.

Flippant ($3.80) was too good in the end and after pouncing hit the line well proving the class of her pedigree and earning a trip to Queensland on January 9 for a shot at the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).

“She was very good today,” Snowden said.

“She’s a lovely filly with a great pedigree.

“The (Magic Millions) Guineas race, I think it’s perfect for her.

“She showed a great turn of foot there and was really strong (today).”

McEvoy agreed that Flippant looked a big hope for the lucrative Gold Coast classic next month.

“She did it really well today,” he said.

“I was happy with the feel she gave me and she’ll go to the Gold Coast now.

“She’s got every chance up there.”

The dual stakes winner has now won five of her eight career starts and firmed into the $7 equal second favourite with Sebring Sun in the early Magic Millions 3YO Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Mahuta.

Team Snowden also prepare the short-priced favourite for the Gold Coast’s $2.5 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m), Capitalist.
