Tony Gollan’s flying mare Traveston Girl is out to cap off her stellar Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival form with her third win on the trot at Doomben in this Saturday’s Bernborough Handicap 2015.
The third and final leg of the Brisbane Summer Sprint Series of races, the $175,000 Listed Treasury Casino & Hotel Bernborough Handicap (1615m) runs as Doomben Race 9 at 4:58pm (local time) as the penultimate event on a bumper 10 race program.
Fourteen final acceptances make up the field for the mile feature that follows on from the Listed Recognition Stakes (1600m) in November and the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1640m) on December 5 both at Doomben and both won by four-year-old Traveston Girl.
The daughter of Flying Spur took her overall record at Doomben up to three wins and two thirds from eight starts with the narrow short-head win over Hopfgarten in the Brisbane Handicap last time out carrying the 54kg minimum.
Jockey Tegan Harrison, also on board for her one and a half-length Recognition Stakes success the run before, retains the ride on Saturday with Traveston Girl going up to 55.5kg as she looks to complete the hat-trick.
She jumps from barrier eight and is the sole last start winner in the line-up.
Her biggest danger who came devastatingly close to running her down earlier in the month is the Robert Heathcote-trained top weight Hopfgarten carrying 59kg from gate seven with Craig Williams in the saddle.
The five-year-old son of Mossman is four from 14 at Doomben and has three wins and three seconds from a dozen runs over the mile ahead of his rematch with Traveston Girl.
Heathcote is confident Hopfgarten can turn the tables on the mare this weekend ahead of another clash with Traveston Girl at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions Day next month.
Runner-up in the Recognition Stakes and third past the post beaten just over a length in the Brisbane Handicap was the John, Dan & Chris Meagher-trained Savabeel six-year-old Shotover River who is also in the mix this weekend.
The gelding is in flying form having won three on the trot at Doomben during the winter over 2200m.
He shoots for his maiden win over 1600m but will need to be at his best from a wide barrier 13 draw.
Brad Stewart takes over for apprentice Luke Dittman in the saddle with Shotover River dropping back from 54.5kg last time out to Saturday’s 54kg minimum.
Following Hopfgarten in the Bernborough Handicap weights with 58kg is Dittman’s new ride, the John Zielke-trained Worthy Cause from the Sunshine Coast.
The four-year-old Choisir stallion comes off stellar interstate form including a Listed win at Flemington over 1400m where he defeated subsequent Emirates Stakes winner Turn Me Loose on October 4.
After a Cox Plate Day fifth behind the same galloper two runs later at Moonee Valley in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) he went up to 1800m at Sandown in mid-November’s Group 3 Eclipse Stakes and ran a brave third to Casino Dancer.
He is back to a mile this weekend and comes off a winning 1270m trial win by nearly three lengths at home from December 15.
Other Bernborough Handicap hopefuls coming off a last start top three finish include Paul Duncan’s Zabeel seven-year-old Blue Lion who was third to Traveston Girl in the Recognition Stakes last month after a Doomben win over the mile on October 31 and the Gai Waterhouse-trained mare Role Model visiting from Sydney for her maiden Doomben run.
