Warwick Farm horseman Matthew Smith will run his smart filly Faraway Town in Sydney at Rosehill Gardens on the weekend as she prepares for her 2016 Magic Millions 2YO Classic run in Queensland next month.
The two-year-old daughter of Not A Single Doubt is a livewire chance in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast Racecourse on January 9 after two strong runs to kick off her career.
Already guaranteed a start in the lucrative Magic Millions Race Day feature, Faraway Town ran second on debut behind Yankee Rose over 1100m at Rosehill in late October before breaking her maiden status last time out.
She returned to Rosehill where she races again this weekend and on a Heavy (9) track thrived in the wet to narrowly defeat Pittsburgh on November 14 and take her earnings up to $85,500.
Now she shoots for back-to-back wins running in an $85,000 2YO Plate (1100m) in her third run over the track and distance on Saturday with jockey Jason Collett booked to replace the injured Jay Ford.
“The pressure is off because she is already qualified,” Smith told AAP.
“But this race fits in nicely because it’s three weeks before the race.
“Even though she doesn’t have to win to get into the Magic Millions I’d certainly like her to.
“She took a little bit of time to get over her last start when she had to contend with a Heavy track but in those few weeks she has definitely improved.
“She is in great shape and has come through the preparation so far with no issues at all.”
One of just four nominees from the 17 early entries for the set weights plus penalties Plate with previous race experience, Faraway Town is sure to be as favourite in betting along with the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Mooshakissa.
The Duporth filly has also had two runs for a third and a win, the victory coming on December 9 at Warwick Farm over 1100m when flying home by three lengths as the $2.70 favourite.
Mooshakissa is also eyeing a Magic Millions 2YO Classic run next month and pays $26 in the all-in markets for the restricted feature through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Faraway Town is just shorter in the futures Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds paying $21 with markets firmly led by another Snowden hopeful, Written Tycoon colt Capitalist at $3.
Five years ago Smith saddled-up Combat Kitty in the Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast where she finished a brave second to Karuta Queen, a result he is hoping to go one better than with Faraway Town this summer.
