A field of two-year-old colts and geldings either kick-off their careers or continue with their spring – summer preparations at Doomben Racecourse this weekend in Brisbane’s 2015 Phelan Ready Stakes, betting tips for which are detailed below.
Set to run as Lough Neagh Stakes Day Race 4 at 1:40pm (local time), 13 hopefuls are in the mix for this year’s $100,000 Listed H G Retail Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m).
Betting on the set weights race through Ladbrokes.com.au is firmly led by the Liam Birchley-trained local Punishing at a firming $2.40, in from $2.80, for the win despite drawing the outside barrier 13 draw.
Brisbane’s best Damian Browne comes aboard the promising Not A Single Doubt colt in place of Jeff Lloyd who rode the horse for his two career openers including an October 24 win over 1100m at Doomben.
Punishing did it easy that day with a three and a half-length victory he’ll be out to repeat this weekend from the horror draw on way to January’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast.
The next best in betting are the rails-drawn Sundance ($5.50) coming off a debut run at this track and distance when second to Emtevee Queen a fortnight back and Kubis ($8) for Robert Heathcote who was fifth in the same November 28 lead-up.
So will Punishing get the job done from the gate and go back-to-back at Doomben or is there an upset Phelan Ready Stakes result on the cards?
#2 Sundance ($5.50)
Sundance is second pick in the markets but the rails draw will see the Gold Coast-based, Toby Edmonds-trained son of I Am Invincible improve off his second on debut a fortnight ago at the same track and distance behind a promising filly. Fitter for that run he’ll be flying from the inside alley with Lloyd staying on and can post his first win here.
#1 Punishing ($2.40)
Race favourite is firming but looks under the odds with the wide alley to overcome. Has had two runs, both eye-catching, but had it easier when winning over 1100m here from barrier one last start. That was in October so gives a bit of fitness away as well as the barrier advantage and while he can come close the gate probably just rules him out of back-to-back Doomben wins.
#5 Par Oneri ($21)
Adding value to the top three in the Phelan Ready is this over-priced runner from the Sunshine Coast stables of Natalie Mccall. The Love Conquers All gelding started for the first time at the Gold Coast on November 21 over 900m when runner-up to Starante. Will appreciate the extra metres in his first trip to Brisbane and could surprise at a good price.
