The $120,000 Listed TAB Werribee Cup (2600m) originally attracted 11 hopefuls before the early scratching of Jamie Edwards’ Severn Road.

Due to jump as Race 6 at 3:45pm (AEST) on Sunday’s eight-race card in country Victoria, the Werribee Cup is shaping up as the ideal race for Brad Rawiller’s mount Tall Ship.

Leading the early markets for the staying showdown, the horse was last seen running a distant second to Chris Waller’s runaway winner Who Shot Thebarman in the Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m).

He gets more distance on Sunday and is down in class but must give away the weight going up a kilo to 60kg as he shoots for his first win since the Warrnambool Cup over 2350m back in May.

Following in the Werribee Cup weights with 57.5kg and drawn one on Tall Ship’s outside is the Henry Dwyer-trained Sonntag jumping from barrier four with Chris Symons in the saddle.

The now five-year-old son of Teofilo won last year’s Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) as a three-year-old and is after his first win since May this year over 2800m at Flemington.

Group 1 performed he improve don a disappointing 14th to Almoonqith in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) in October to run third to Junoob last time out over 2200m in the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) on November 21 and will appreciate the extra metres on the weekend.

Better weighted and drawn the rails with barrier one is the Peter Moody-trained four-year-old Tavistock mare Imperial Lass getting in on the 54kg minimum.

She was ninth two back behind Lucia Valentina in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day before her second in easier company over 2500m at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago.

While only boasting winning form up to 2040m she handled herself well at the 2500m distance test on November 28 and can repeat a similar effort here back in stakes’ company.

Drawn wider in gate eight for Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne is another light-weight hope, the Aaron Purcell-trained Swacadelic who comes off a Moonee Valley win over 2040m from last week.

The imported Adlerflug five-year-old won his first race down under on December 4 and is on the short back-up here dropping from 59.5kg to 54kg as he shoots for his first victory over further than 2200m.

Other notable Werribee Cup hopes this summer include the Paul Jones-trained eight-year-old Mujadale looking to improve on his seventh in the Ballarat Cup from three weeks ago and Brisbane raider Pop ‘N’ Scotch whose last start produced a ninth in the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) over the two miles.
