The feature race of the weekend takes place in Sydney at Randwick Racecourse with a capacity field engaged for the Villiers Stakes 2015, betting tips for which are detailed below.
Twenty milers face off in this summer’s $250,000 Group 2 Inglis Villiers Stakes (1600m), due to jump as Randwick Race 7 at 4:25pm (AEST), with betting led by the local Patrick Webster-trained Happy Clapper.
The lightly-weighted and in-form Teofilo five-year-old sits top of the Villiers Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the race this Saturday, paying $4.60 to extend his winning streak to three on the trot.
At his latest start he saluted over 1500m at Rosehill carrying 60.5kg and dropping back to the 53kg minimum for the Villiers Stakes should be flying.
Just two other hopes are under $10 for the win with the Chris Waller-trained ATC Cup winning mare Telepathic ($7) drawn out wide in gate 18 and track specialist God’s In Him ($9) jumping from barrier four.
So will one of the single figure fancies salute in this year’s Villiers Stakes or is there value tipping an upset from further down the markets with John O’Shea’s Festival Stakes runner-up It’s Somewhat ($8 out to $10) on the drift and still a good price on offer for former Kiwi galloper Puccini ($15 into $12)?
1st
#15 God’s In Him ($9)
A three-time winner from five previous Randwick runs this Team Hawkes-trained six-year-old is only lightly raced for his age having his 14th start on the weekend and will appreciate getting back to the track he saluted over in back-to-back winter wins in the wet. Any rain will help as he thrives in the mud but is versatile and has run well on Good going recently. Back in September he was runner-up narrowly in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) with 53kg and the drop back to that weight on the weekend will be a massive relief after a brave fourth carrying 61kg over 1400m last time out on November 21.
2nd
#13 Telepathic ($7)
Waller’s flying Mossman mare has a nasty gate to overcome so she’ll need to be at her best but the class is too good to ignore. She comes off back-to-back Rosehill wins including a nearly two length effort in the ATC Cup (2000m) last time out. A fortnight between runs looks ideal and she drops down in distance for this. Whether the mile is too sharp is a question but she is in form and well weighted.
3rd
#4 Puccini ($12)
Now prepared by Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir, this Encosta De Lago stallion is a dual Group 1 winner in New Zealand and caught the eye at Sandown on November 14 when runner-up in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) behind Villiers Stakes hope Casino Dancer. Has winning form over this distance (13-4-0-3) and if he can produce the efforts of his earlier seasons is in the mix at a nice price.
