Running as Doomben Race 7 at 3:37pm (local time) a capacity field of youngsters face off in this year’s $100,000 Listed Star Liquor Gold Edition Plate (1200m) including early favourite in betting Secret Saga.

Coming off back-to-back wins at the track from November the Tony Gollan-trained Real Saga filly is currently paying $4 in the latest Gold Edition Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to beat home the boys and make it three on the trot even from her wide barrier 13 draw.

Last start she scored in stakes’ company taking out the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) narrowly on November 28 and she is tipped to continue her purple patch and salute for the sixth time at Doomben at her ninth run at the course.

Close second favourite at $4.60 is the market mover My Girl Hayley drawn a treat in gate four for jockey Tye Angland who rides Gollan’s Bradbury’s Luck filly in place of Jim Byrne.

Byrne was aboard for her last start third beaten only a length by Dram Of Red over 1100m at the track a fortnight ago from a wide alley and from a better barrie5r she comes right into the mix at a course she has twice run third at from as many starts.

The next best in Gold Edition Plate betting this Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival are the aforementioned last start Doomben winner Dram Of Red ($6.50) for trainer Matthew Dunn in barrier six and the fellow Dunn-trained Madotti ($8.50) drawn one closer to the rails than his stablemate.

So do the bookies have the Gold Edition Plate result spot on or is there value further down the markets tipping an upset from the likes of the reigning Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic winner Le Chef ($10) or runner-up to Secret Saga in her two lead-up runs La Dolce Vita ($14)?

#1 Le Chef ($10)

It has been nearly a year between wins for Darryl Hansen’s Sunshine Coast-trained Exceed And Excel gelding whose last victory was in the MM 2YO Classic in January. That win showed this up-and-comer has class but he has failed to live up to the same form in his three subsequent runs over the past 11 months. He carried a hefty 60kg last time out at Doomben when fifth to Dram Of Red and with 57kg here at set weights from gate three can turn things around and improve.

#8 Secret Saga ($4)

This filly’s from Brisbane’s best stable is flying and won in black-type company last time out at the same track and distance giving her a gun record at Doomben (8-5-1-0) and two from four over 1200m. She is drawn wide however in 13 so has her work cut out for her if she is to extend the winning streak here. Class factor is high though so can’t be left out.

#11 La Dolce Vita ($14)

The bookies rate the Secret Saga form but the price on the filly that ran second to her in both the lead-up runs is at a much more generous price. Bradley Smith’s daughter of Ferocity came within a nose of Saturday’s favourite in the Mode Plate and can do so again here with Luke Tarrant in the saddle again, and she is drawn three closer to the fence than Secret Saga.
