Three stakes races highlight the Randwick race card in Sydney this Saturday for Villiers Stakes Day including the summer stayers facing off in the Christmas Cup 2015, betting tips for the mile and a half clash found below.
Running as Randwick Race 5 at 3:05pm (AEST) the field for this season’s $100,000 Listed Avijohn Contracting Christmas Cup (2400m) is down to 11 hopefuls after the early scratching of the Ben Ahrens-trained Chillin With Dylan.
Leading Christmas Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, home of Best Tote or SP + 20% on the Villiers Stakes this Saturday, at $3.20 and firming is the widely-drawn Jiayuguan.
John Thompson’s Teofilo mare has won back-to-back races over this distance to take her 2400m record up to three wins from four starts and she drops from 58.5kg last time out at Rosehill on November 21 to 54kg this weekend.
She is followed in Christmas Cup betting by the likes of the David Vandyke-trained November Topaz runner-up Sir John Hawkwood ($4.20) who is also proven over the 2400m and the best fancied of Chris Waller’s trio Quick Strike ($6) coming off a third to Jiayuguan.
So can the favourite salute for the Christmas Cup punters or is there value further down the markets in the likes of Waller’s ATC Cup third placegetter Vilanova ($6.50) or Lucky Lucky Lucky ($8) who ran second in the same lead-up over 2000m won by Villiers Stakes hope Telepathic?
#5 Jiayuguan ($3.20)
The favourite is on the move in the markets and we’re happy to follow the money trail with her form looking to stack up here. Three from four over 2400m she’s a mile and a half specialist and gets the distance again here with a nice weight drop down from 58.5kg to the 54kg minimum. Has a double digit draw to overcome but the light weight she can do it and continue her purple patch of form against tougher company.
#6 Quick Strike ($6)
Waller’s progressive High Chaparral four-year-old looks set to strike here after a third to the race favourite three weeks back with 61kg on his back. He too is down in the weights on 54kg for Saturday’s rematch and is ready to return to the winning form he produced at Canterbury two back over 1900m.
#9 Bring Luck ($11)
Warwick Farm-trained Sebring four-year-old beat home Sir John Hawkwood (2nd) and Vilanova (3rd), who he sees again on Saturday, two back to win the November Topaz on a Heavy Rosehill track before his third in the ATC Cup. The Telepathic form is well-rated and while he is up over 2400m for the first time he looks fit off a home trial win from December 4 and is well-weighted.
