Thirteen two-year-old colts and geldings are engaged in the opening black-type on the Brisbane race card this Saturday with Punishing to wear the number one saddlecloth in the $100,000 Listed H G Retail Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m).

Despite drawing the far outside alley in his attempt at back-to-back wins, the Liam Birchley-trained Not A Single Doubt colt also fills the number one spot in the current Phelan Ready Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.50 for the win.

He is the market mover backed in from $2.80 with Damian Browne taking over for Jeff Lloyd in the saddle of the $26 hope for next month’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

Lloyd rode the horse for his two career openers including the big three and a half-length victory over 1100m at Doomben on October 24 that Punishing will be out to repeat with the tongue-tie added to his gear to help out.

Following in the Phelan Ready Stakes odds are three other single figure chances including $5.50 second pick Sundance who gets the coveted run along the rails from barrier one should Lloyd take it.

Toby Edmonds’ Gold Coast-based I Am Invincible colt is second-up after running second to Emtevee Queen over the same track and distance a fortnight ago and should strip fitter for this.

Also under $10 for the win are Kubis ($8) and Star Of Pompeii ($8.50) drawn in barriers four and 11 respectively.

Prepared by Robert Heathcote Love Conquers All gelding Kubis ran fifth in the same lead-up race as Sundance when beaten only one and a half lengths, a good gate here and Michael Cahill in the saddle helping him improve second-up.

Star Of Pompeii has the wider barrier but top hoop Glen Boss comes on the Gillian Heinrich-trained son of Star Witness, the colt looking to improve on his seventh to Punishing on debut back in October.

At longer odds in Phelan Ready Stakes betting this weekend are other livewire hopes including Mark Webb’s Sunshine Coast-trained Burn Notice ($12) having his fifth career start and debutant Beyond Brave ($13) for Eagle Farm’s Danny Boughoure.
