Punishing Tops 2015 Phelan Ready Stakes Field

Liam Birchley’s Magic Millions Classic hope Punishing leads the field for Saturday’s Phelan Ready Stakes 2015 as the young gun gears up for his run at the Gold Coast next month.

Brisbane-based Birchley has the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 9 as the main summer mission for his promising Not A Single Doubt colt Punishing who runs at Doomben for the third time this weekend.

The up-and-comer, who broke his maiden status with a big three and a half-length victory over 1100m at Doomben on October 24, has his third career start in the $100,000 Listed H G Retail Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m).

Making his black-type debut in the set weights clash for two-year-old colts and geldings, Punishing suffered an early blow for his bid at back-to-back wins drawing wide in barrier 13 of 13.

Damian Browne takes over for Jeff Lloyd in the saddle, Lloyd guiding the youngster to victory from the inside alley last time out.

Punishing is rated a $26 chance in futures Magic Millions Classic betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, a price sure to firm if he can overcome the horror gate in Saturday’s feature.

Also drawn wide in this year’s Phelan Ready Stakes field are the likes of the Gillian Heinrich-trained Gold Coast visitor Star Of Pompeii (11) out to improve on a seventh to Punishing last time out and Danny Bougoure’s debutant Beyond Brave (10).

The rails run from barrier one meanwhile belongs to the Toby Edmonds-trained Sundance who Lloyd rides second-up.

The I Am Invincible colt had his maiden start at the same track on November 28 over the same 1050m distance he is over this weekend when running a brave second beaten only a neck by Emteevee Queen in a two-years-old handicap carrying 57.5kg.

He drops a kilo under the conditions of the Phelan Ready and should relish another run at the track and distance.

Also draw well are the Mark Webb-trained Burn Notice (3) and Kubis (4) for one of Brisbane’s best Robert Heathcote.

Sidereus colt Burn Notice from the Sunshine Coast is the best tried of the field with four previous runs including three at Doomben.

He was seventh last time out behind The Last Kiss when stepped up to 1100m for the first time, and his sole win to date was a three length effort over 900m at the Gold Coast back in mid-October.

Heathcote’s hopeful Kubis has Michael Cahill in the saddle this weekend as he comes off a brave fifth beaten only 1.5 lengths by Emtevee Queen on debut a fortnight ago.

Other notable hopes include Webb’s other runner Sidereus Attacks who ran third to Punishing last start and the Natalie Mccall-trained Love Conquers All gelding Par Oneri whose debut was a second over 900m at the Gold Coast on November 21.
