Le Chef Leads 2015 Gold Edition Plate Field

Darryl Hansen’s reigning Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Le Chef will shoot for his first win since the Gold Coast feature back in January leading the field for Saturday’s Gold Edition Plate 2015 at Doomben Racecourse.

Last summer the Exceed And Excel gelding enjoyed a stellar run of form including his upset win as a $21 outsider in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast.

Le Chef hasn’t won against since with three unplaced efforts, most recently fifth when carrying 60kg on November 28 behind Dram Of Red in a three-years-old handicap at Doomben.

He returns to the track this Saturday for his fourth Doomben run shooting for his first win and should enjoy dropping back to 57kg for the set weights conditions of the $100,000 Listed Star Liquor Gold Edition Plate (1200m).

The sprint for three-year-old gallopers attracted a capacity field this season with 16 confirmed starters plus the Gillian Heinrich-trained Star Justice waiting for a run as the sole emergency.

Le Chef is drawn a treat in barrier three with only the Tony Gollan-trained Most Important (2) and the rails-drawn Sold For Song (1) jumping from his inside.

Tegan Harrison rides Gollan’s I Am Invincible colt Most Important who has won three from nine to date including two from three over Saturday’s distance.

Last start he was sixth in the same race that produces Le Chef when beaten four lengths, form he will look to atone for getting up in the metres on Saturday.

Gollan has a total of three Gold Edition Plate hopes on the weekend with Most Important joined by stablemates Secret Saga and My Girl Hayley drawn at opposite ends of the field with barriers 13 and four respectively.

Real Saga filly Secret Saga might have the wide gate for her and jockey Jim Byrne to overcome but she is in flying form shooting for her fourth win from five starts.

She comes off back-to-back Doomben wins including her narrow victory on November 28 in the Listed Mode Plate (1200m), her fifth success at the track from eight runs.

The more lightly raced My Girl Hayley meanwhile has her fourth career start on Saturday, the Bradbury’s Luck filly having run third in her two previous Doomben assignments.

The most recent of those was behind Dram Of Red a fortnight ago when beaten only a length after jumping from a wide barrier 11 of 12 draw.

She has a far better barrier on Saturday and looks a big hope for jockey Tye Angland in the classy field.

The aforementioned Sold For Song who jumps from gate one with apprentice James Orman continuing his association with Kevin Kemp’s Toowoomba-trained Collate filly is also lightly raced.

She won on debut at the start of November at the Sunshine Coast before a brave second behind Dram Of Red at Doomben from gate 10 as a $31 outsider in betting, form that could stack up in Saturday’s Gold Edition Plate.

Matthew Dunn’s winner of the key lead-up race, the Mitty’s QTIS Three-Years Old Handicap (1100m) from two weeks ago, Red Element gelding Dram Of Red looks a big danger again this weekend.

Hailing from Murwillumbah in New South Wales the progressive galloper has won three of his five career starts so far, two of those achieved at Doomben where he races again on the weekend with Jeff Lloyd in the saddle from gate six.

Also coming off winning form is the Chris Munce-trained, Michael Cahill-ridden Stick With Me.

The Duporth filly is after her third on the trot after two wins over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast this time in, but is up in class here racing in black-type company for the first time since her sixth to Flippant in the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) at Doomben back in early June.
