2015 Lough Neagh Stakes Field: 4 For Gollan

Brisbane’s Premiership leading trainer this season Tony Gollan will saddle-up four stablemates in the Lough Neagh Stakes 2015 at Doomben Racecourse this weekend.

Due to jump as Doomben Race 8 at 4:17pm (local) as the headline of four black-types on the Brisbane card, this year’s $175,000 Listed Jones Retail Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) features a final field of 11 hopefuls.

To wear the number one saddlecloth is Gollan’s Group 1 winner Temple Of Boom jumping from barrier seven with Tegan Harrison aboard on the 59.5kg top weight.

A nine-year-old son of Piccolo the veteran hasn’t won a race since April last year when beating home stablemate and half-brother Spirit Of Boom in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm.

He has come close in Group 1 company a number of times since, the 2012 The Galaxy winner’s last start a seventh in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) on November 28 he’ll be out to improve on second-up on Saturday.

Yet to win at Doomben or over Saturday’s distance however there is likely to be value outside of Temple Of Boom in this year’s Lough Neagh Stakes.

Gollan’s other highest rated hope is Fontelina drawn ideally in barrier two for jockey Jim Byrne, the 58.5kg second top weight coming off a George Moore Stakes third behind Didntcostalot.

He has three wins over the 1350m and only goes up a half-kilo from his last run.

The two other Gollan-trained hopes in the mix are then Brave Ali drawn the outside alley in gate 11 and Gundy Spirit in barrier three with apprentice riders Alannah Fancourt and Luke Tarrant to ride respectively.

It has been a year since O’Reilly gelding Brave Ali had a run with the now nine-year-old’s last start being over 2200m at Doomben last December, but he returns from injury on Saturday.

Gundy Spirit meanwhile has had a lovely lead-up, the Jet Spur five-year-old fourth in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) two back before his George Moore second as a 31/1 shot.

Getting in on the 54kg minimum again Gundy Spirit looks a livewire chance to place in black type company this Saturday also and is sure to start at shorter odds as he shoots for his fifth win from 11 runs over 1350m.

Pat Duff’s Keith Noud Handicap winner Steel Zip is also a big hope in the Lough Neagh Stakes after his success in mid-November took the eight-year-old Canadian Silver gelding up to three straight Doomben wins this time in.

He carried 57kg to victory last time out and with a freshen-up between runs he should be fresh for his latest assignment going up to 58kg with Jeff Lloyd aboard again.

The other last start winners in the line-up are Peter Moody’s in-form Victorian raider Weinholt coming off a 1200m success at Ballarat three weeks back and the Robert Heathcote-trained Commands gelding Saluter.

Six-year-old Saluter ran a nice third to Steel Zip in the Keith Noud before his Doomben win over 1350m on November 28 carrying 58kg form barrier 15 of 15.

He drops a notable four kilos to the 54kg minimum this weekend and from the inside alley this time is a winning hope.
