Tasmania’s two best gallopers come face to face this evening under the lights at Launceston Racecourse with dual Group 2 winner The Cleaner and Group 1 performed Admiral leading the Conquering Stakes 2015 odds.
One of Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival’s early black-types, tonight’s $100,000 Listed Launceston Mitsubishi Conquering WFA (1400m) runs as race five at 8:40pm (local) and features eight weight-for-age hopefuls.
Odds-on favourite in the latest Conquering Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the feature, paying $1.85 for the win is the Mick Burles-trained eight-year-old The Cleaner.
A winner of over $1.3 million in prize money he returns to Tasmanian for the first time since late February after a stellar campaign in Melbourne that included a second win in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and a third in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).
His last start was a seventh to Winx in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and he is sure to appreciate a step back in both class and distance this weekend.
From 14 starts at the Launceston track The Cleaner has won five times and he has two second place finishes from three previous runs over 1400m.
Last time at Launceston he was runner-up behind the Barry Campbell-trained Admiral when giving away four kilos to the winner in the Listed George Adams Stakes (1600m).
Admiral is also in the mix this evening occupying the second line of Conquering Stakes betting at $2.20 to beat home The Cleaner for a second time.
The now four-year-old son of Mossman however will need to lift as he meets The Cleaner equal with 59kg each under the WFA conditions.
A superstar at the track with five wins and a second from seven runs, Admiral is also Group 1 performed in Melbourne when fifth to Wandjina at Flemington in the Australian Guineas (1600m) in early March.
His latest run was a fifth first-up to Hellova Street in the Listed Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Launceston, and his Spreyton-based trainer Campbell is confident he has improved since then.
From three second-up runs to date Admiral is undefeated, form he is looking to continue in the Conquering Stakes when jumping from barrier one – the same gate he won the George Adams from last summer.
The only other runner under $20 for the win is Streetwise Savoire ($12) drawn one outside The Cleaner with barrier four and David Pires retaining the ride.
Scott Brunton’s six-year-old hasn’t won since early February at Hobart when beating home Admiral in the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m).
Sixth in the Newmarket last time out when still beaten under two lengths, Streetwise Savoire is a gun over 1400m with four wins, two seconds and a third from nine runs over the distance he will appreciate getting back over in the Conquering Stakes.
The next best in betting after a boilover result in the Launceston feature are equal $26 hopes Geegees Goldengirl and Spirit Of Nia.
