Traveston Girl Beats the Boys in 2015 Brisbane Handicap

Tony Gollan’s flying mare Traveston Girl enjoyed her second black-type win over the boys at Doomben Racecourse in as many starts over the weekend with success in the Brisbane Handicap 2015.

Last time out on November 21 the four-year-old daughter of Flying Spur enjoyed a big one and a half-length victory in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1600m).

A fortnight later she returned to Doomben for her eighth run at the track to post her third success, her fourth overall career win at start number 14, with a narrower effort in the $100,000 Listed Queensland Bus Industry Council Brisbane Handicap (1640m).

After her win last time out and her proven form over a mile Traveston Girl went out as the $2.80 favourite with Tegan Harrison retaining the ride.

It was a nail-biting finish right on the line with the Robert Heathcote-trained Mossman gelding Hopfgarten ($6.50) relishing a return home and step back in distance off a string of runs including two in elite level company in Melbourne.

Last seen running sixth in the Listed Cup Day Plate (1800m) at Flemington on November 3, five-year-old Hopfgarten had star interstate hoop Craig Williams in the saddle on Saturday and went down by just a short half-head.

He had a length to spare over the Brisbane Handicap third placegetter Shotover River ($9), the local John, Dan & Chris Meagher-trained son of Savabeel finishing behind Traveston Girl again after his second as a $26 outsider in the Recognition Stakes.

In a slowly-run race until the final 600m, Hopfgarten got ahead of the eventual winner into the straight before Traveston Girl kicked away to extend herself and win by the barest margin.

Brisbane’s premiership leading trainer Gollan said he was confident the mile was her best distance and that the mare would strip fitter after the win.

“We knew there wouldn’t be much pace in the race and Tegan was able to run it to suit her. I knew she would fight back when headed because she has done it even in Group One races,” he said speaking of Traveston Girl’s brave second to Amicus in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in October last year.

After the thrilling finish, trainer of the second placed Hopfgarten Heathcote said his horse wouldn’t be beaten by the mare again when the Brisbane Handicap quinella clash again at the track on December 19 in the $175,000 Listed Bernborough Handicap (1600m).

“I knew he would be a bit soft at the end of the race because he had a little break since coming back from Melbourne. We hadn’t done a lot with him,” he said.

“We will meet Traveston Girl two more times this summer and we will beat her.”

The Bernborough Handicap leads into a run for both top gallopers at the Gold Coast on January 9 in the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (1800m).
