Slots Scores 2015 Just Now Quality Handicap Win

Grant Marshall’s visiting Newcastle-trained mare Slots scored the Just Now Quality Handicap 2015 win in Brisbane over the weekend as the favourite in the Doomben showdown.

Twelve fillies and mares took to the track in this summer’s $100,000 Listed Bus Supply Partners Just Now Quality Handicap (1350m) including Marshall’s Casino Prince six-year-old Slots who went out as the $5 favourite in betting.

She didn’t disappoint the punters either proving the Sydney form was the one to follow after her recent nice runs back home including a last start second behind I Am Zelady over 1200m at Rosehill only the weekend before.

Marshall made the call to keep apprentice jockey Lester Grace in the saddle for Slot’s Queensland assignment, the mare’s fourth Doomben run, despite Saturday’s handicap clash being a non-claiming race and it proved the winning move.

Grace partnered the mare for the fourth time on the trot and produced his second win on her in that time crossing the line a length ahead of the local Kelso Wood-trained Group 1 performed Real Surreal ($13) who was racing for the first time since July and was brave in defeat carrying a full five kilograms more than the winner.

Finishing off the trifecta in the first of two Listed Doomben features on the Brisbane Handicap Day card was then Les Ross’s $15 chance Total Authority who was just a nose further back in her black-type debut.

It was Grace’s first ride at Doomben but the 20-year-old, who is apprenticed to Gerald Ryan, showed his class and affinity with $1700 bargain buy Slots who has now won $242,690 in prize money over her 30 starts that have produced six wins.

“It’s my first trip up here and it’s great to come up with a result like that,” Grace said on Saturday according to The Courier Mail.

“What can I say, it’s a great track when I win with my first start in a race here. I’ve had a bit of success with this horse and I’ve never been out of the top three with her.

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity from Grant and the owners, they have all stuck by me.”

Marshall admitted that a black-type win had been the ultimate goal all along for Slots to increase her future value as a broodmare, something he has now achieved.

“We wanted that Listed win for her future as a broodmare, that puts a good value on her,” he said.

“We were always aiming for that black-type win as we wanted to put her on the charts as a broodmare.”

Slots is now likely to stay on in Queensland for a couple more runs during the Brisbane Summer Carnival before being sent for a well-earned break in the paddock.

“She might stay up here in Queensland now,” Marshall said.

“She will probably have another couple of starts and then go for a spell.

“Then she will come back and have one more preparation before going to stud. It has been a great journey with her because she was a cheapie that only cost $1700.”
