Sheidel Scores 2015 RS Crawford Stakes Win

David Harrison’s in-form mare Sheidel continued to frank the form coming out of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival’s fillies and mares’ series with her Kingston Town Classic Day win in the R.S. Crawford Stakes 2015.

The four-year-old daughter of Holy Roman Emperor posted her 10th career win at start number 14 over the weekend making it back-to-back black-type victories when taking on the boys in the $100,000 Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes (1000m).

The run before on November 21 she backed up off a fourth to Rock Magic in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) and enjoyed a win as the odds-on favourite for the punters in the Listed Jungle Mist Classic (1200m).

On Saturday Jungle Mist runner-up Ideal Image won the second leg of the series with her half-length victory over Cool Trade in the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m) before Sheidel ($4) saluted one race later in the R.S. Crawford with Patrick Carbery in the saddle.

Taking her imposing Ascot track record up to eight wins from nine starts at Perth’s premier course she and Carbery had a half-length to spare over the Grant Williams-trained favourite Silverstream ($2.10) in the set weights plus penalties sprint.

The step down in distance suited Sheidel who has now won five from eight over the 1000m, while four-year-old Al Maher mare Silverstream is two from three over the distance after her second as the beaten favourite that followed a brave fourth in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

Williams, who took out the day’s marquee race with Perfect Reflection retaining her undefeated record become the first filly in history to take out the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), also prepared Saturday’s RS Crawford third placegetter Shining Knight ($7) who came off a Winterbottom sixth.

Carbery had Super Saturday’s Jungle Mist winner settled in the ideal part of the track for a cruisy run throughout against a hot field, many of who struggled for runs near the rails including the William Pike-ridden Silverstream.

Winning Lark Hill horseman Harrison said after the win he was happy he and connections opted to avoid a step up to 1400m taking on Ideal Image in the Jungle Dawn Classic and instead step Sheidel back down to a genuine sprint.

“She won very well, but she didn’t have a lot of pressure,” he told Perth Racing.

“It worked out perfectly.”

Harrison added that the next likely option for the flying mare was a run at Ascot on Perth Cup Day in the $80,000 Listed Summer Scorcher (1000m).
