Mick Huxtable’s smart sprinter Lord Aspen overcame a wide barrier in the feature race at Morphettville in South Australia over the weekend to salute for the punters in the Quayclean Stakes 2015.
Registered this summer as the City Of Marion Stakes, the $100,000 Listed Quayclean Stakes (1200m) featured a bumper field of 15 and the Murray Bridge-based favourite Lord Aspen jumped from the outside alley with Matthew Neilson retaining the ride.
The four-year-old son of Good Journey came off some very nice form including a Listed third at Flemington over 1400m behind Worthy Cause in early October and a last start fourth over the mile at home in the Listed Murray Bridge Cup (1600m).
A drop back to a sprint distance proved the winning formula for the smart gelding who retained his undefeated record over the 1200m with three wins from as many starts.
Posting his first victory since a win over the distance at Morphettville Parks back on September 12, the Group 2 performed up-and-comer who ran fifth to Petrology in last year’s Sandown Guineas jumped as the $2.70 favourite and didn’t disappoint.
On the line he had three-quarters of a length to spare over the versatile Lloyd Kennewell-trained Baligari ($7), runner-up to Faust in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2020m) up in Brisbane during the winter, with Richard Jolly’s always honest seven-year-old Karacatis ($7) finishing off the trifecta 1.4 lengths off the winner in third.
Lord Aspen has now won six of his nine career starts and is three from three at Morphettville.
It was a searing hot day in Adelaide for Saturday’s meeting but Lord Aspen took it in his stride, the large framed galloper improving on his recent form and overcoming an outside run with no cover to fly home for the Listed victory.
Winning hoop Neilson was thrilled to see the once highly spruiked galloper back in winning form and showing the class he had earlier in his career and earlier this season.
“It’s good to see he’s back,” he told The Advertiser.
Huxtable said the horse’s poor performance last time out was due to a condition known as kissing spine and that he knew Lord Aspen had it in him to bounce back.
“He’s a good horse, so I knew something wasn’t right when he went so poorly last time,” he said.
A return to the track is now on the agenda for the Quayclean Stakes winner on Boxing Day, December 26, for a run in the $100,000 Listed Christmas Handicap (1200m).
