Dust Me Off Scores Upset in 2015 GA Towton Cup

Paul Tapper’s Oakford galloper Dust Me Off scored the upset in the G.A. Towton Cup 2015 at Ascot over the weekend taking out the black-type staying feature on Kingston Town Classic Day as a 26/1 outsider in betting.

Running as the fifth on the bumper nine race program, a field of nine faced off in this year’s $100,000 Listed G.A. Towton Cup (2200m).

Race favourite coming off a fifth in the Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2100m) at the track over 100m less a fortnight ago was the Darren Mcauliffe-trained Snippetson six-year-old Rebelson.

Despite his spot in the markets and subsequent Kingston Town Classic winning jockey William Pike staying aboard, Rebelson ($3.70) could only manage to finish third in the GA Towton Cup trifecta.

The win went to the Chris Parnham-ridden Trade Fair four-year-old Dust Me Off, the gelding enjoying his first win at his fourth start at Perth’s premier track.

Before the GA Towton Cup, Dust Me Off had won just one of his 16 previous starts and had never run in stakes’ company.

His black-type debut however was a winning one where he handled a rain-affected Soft (7) track to beat home the Neville Parnham-trained High Chaparral eight-year-old Fulgur ($16) by a tidy two lengths.

The winning ride from Parnham, whose other best result on the day was a second to odds-on favourite Arcadia Dream in the $100,000 Listed Aquanita Stakes (1800m) aboard Fremond to kick off the card, was perfectly timed.

Parnham settled the eventual winner fourth off the pace throughout with Rebelson up front and setting a genuine tempo in the GA Towton Cup.

A brilliant turn of foot from Dust Me Off though saw the winner fly home late to win running away in an improved effort off his sixth when beaten six lengths by Shinta Mani over the same track and distance only the previous weekend.

“He’s copped bad barriers and bad rides all the way through,” Tapper said post-win on Saturday.

“We were quite confident believe it or not.”

Tapper said Dust Me Off was the best horse he had trained and there was a chance he could be tested in tougher company again on New Year’s Day in the lucrative $400,000 Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) over the mile and a half.

The trainer was also full of praise for Parnham who was proving a winning jockey on his horses.

“His last three rides for me, he’s had two winners and a second,” Tapper said.

“All the Parnham’s can ride, and they are good kids and good horseman.”

Also on track for a 2016 Perth Cup run is GA Towton Cup runner-up, imported and interstate-performed galloper Fulgur who hit the line strongly on Saturday.
