2015 Villiers Stakes Nominations Feature Telepathic

Chris Waller’s ATC Cup winning mare Telepathic is one of the headline nominations taken for the feature race in Sydney this weekend, the Villiers Stakes 2015 taking centre stage at Royal Randwick.

A five-year-old daughter of Mossman, Telepathic has won her past two starts on the trot at Rosehill and is entered for Saturday’s $250,000 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) over the mile at Sydney’s other major racecourse for her latest run.

Twenty-six milers make up the Villiers Stakes nominations this Sydney Summer Racing Carnival including two for leading trainer Waller.

Waller has nominated for his veteran 10-year-old I’m Imposing who ran second to Rudy in the race last year as well as the in-form Telepathic who has won just one of her five previous starts over 1600m.

If accepted for the quality handicap she will be dropping back notably in distance after winning the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) on November 28.

A total of seven last start winners are in the Villiers Stakes mix this year including the Michael Moroney-trained Rhythm To Spare who also vies for a third win on the trot.

The six-year-old son of Pins won at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day and posted back-to-back wins over the mile carrying 60kg when taking out the Listed Kilmore Cup (1600m) on November 22.

Another last start winning mare along with Telepathic who saluted in Group 3 company on November 14 at Sandown Hillside is the Mike Van Gestel-trained Casino Dancer.

The Casino Prince five-year-old, based at Hawkesbury, ran a brave third to Lucia Valentina in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) two back during the Melbourne Cup Carnival before her Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m).

That was her 52nd career start and her second Group 3 win after her two length upset as a $41 outsider over Wine Tales at Randwick in the Angst Stakes over the mile in October.

Also coming out of the Eclipse Stakes into the Villiers Stakes this weekend is possibly the Darren Weir-trained runner-up Puccini who did it tough from barrier 15 of 16.

Among the other horses looking to extend winning form are recent winner over 1500m at Rosehill Happy Clapper, Goulburn Cup champ Just A Blur, the John O’Shea-trained Commands gelding Medcaut who won over 1400m at Randwick last Saturday and Mighty Lucky.

Prepared by Gosford’s Fred Cowell, Casino Prince six-year-old Mighty Lucky took out the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on November 28 defeating It’s Somewhat.

He has had just one previous unplaced Randwick run and is yet to win from three starts over 1600m, but has placed second and third over the distance he’ll be over if taking on the Villiers Stakes challenge this weekend.

Festival Stakes runner-up It’s Somewhat is also nominated for a Villiers Stakes rematch, the Godolphin galloper shooting for his first win since beating last year’s Villiers Stakes winner Rudy home in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) in late February at Warwick Farm.

Other notable nominees include Tim Martin’s Goulburn Cup runner-up Moral Victory, last year’s Queensland Oaks winning mare Tinto and the John Thompson-trained Bernardini mare Zanbagh who won the November Handicap before her fourth in the Festival Stakes last time out.
