One of four stakes races on the Doomben card for Saturday this year’s $100,000 Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) for two-year-old colts and geldings attracted 12 early entries, nominations extended until 9am (local time) on Tuesday morning.

Of the current entries just two are non-maidens including local Not A Single Doubt colt Punishing.

He debuted over this track and distance on October 3 running a close third before a runaway three and a half-length victory over Endless Days on October 24 when stepped up to 1100m.

Dropping back to 1050m on the weekend Punishing shoots for another win on way to a possible run in the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 9.

He pays $26 in the current all-in Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds, last year’s Phelan Ready Stakes winner Wicked Intent going on two runs later to run sixth to Le Chef in the lucrative restricted summer feature.

Wicked Intent won back-to-back races before his first stakes success in the Phelan Ready last Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival.

Along with Punishing the only other horse nominated for this year’s Phelan Ready Stakes with a win on his record is Mark Webb’s Sidereus colt Burn Notice.

A four-time starter, he won second-up over 900m at the Gold Coast in mid-October before a second over 1050m at Doomben on November 7 and a last start seventh over 1100m from November 21 beaten over three lengths he’ll be out to atone for here.

Webb has also nominated for another son of Sidereus, Sidereus Attacks who ran third to Punishing on October 24 at his second career run.

The only other horse in the futures Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds along with Punishing under $61 for the win and nominated for Saturday’s lead-up is Sundance ($41).

Prepared on the Gold Coast by Toby Edmonds the I Am Invincible colt has had one run when finishing a close second beaten only a neck by Emtevee in a two-years-old handicap over 1050m at Doomben on November 28.

Other youngsters with previous race experience include the Brent Stanley-trained Coming In Hot and Par Oneri prepared by the Sunshine Coast’s Natalie Mccall.

Snippetson colt Coming In Hot ran third to Nikitas, $8 third favourite to win the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic currently in markets led by Capitalist ($4), on debut over 1200m at Doomben last Saturday with Craig Williams in the saddle.

Par Oneri also placed on debut when runner-up to Starante over 900m at the Gold Coast on November 21.

Other notable hopes include the Robert Heathcote-trained Kubis and Sugar Ray Red prepared by Gillian Heinrich.
