2015 Lough Neagh Stakes Nominations Feature Steel Zip

Pat Duff’s flying veteran Steel Zip is one of the headline hopefuls nominated for the Lough Neagh Stakes 2015 when the action of the Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival continues at Doomben Racecourse this weekend.

Saturday is host to four black-type Brisbane features including the $175,000 Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m), nominations for which have been extended until 9am (QLD time) on Tuesday morning.

Of the original 14 entries just two come off a last start win including Deagon-trained Canadian Silver eight-year-old Steel Zip who has won his past three on the trot.

All three wins, which date back to early September, have been at Doomben including two over the Lough Neagh distance of 1350m.

Last time out Steel Zip boasted his 11th career win at start number 67 bagging some black-type with a narrow victory over Top Tone in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) on November 14.

Third past the post in the Keith Noud was the Robert Heathcote-trained Commands six-year-old Saluter who backed up to win over 1350m at the track on November 28.

The in-form gelding is the other last start winner nominated for Saturday’s showdown after breaking his Doomben maiden status at his 12th start at the course last time out when overcoming the outside barrier 15 of 15 draw to win running away by nearly three lengths.

Brisbane’s leading trainer of the season Tony Gollan has another strong hand this weekend with four Lough Neagh Stakes nominees including the returning Brave Ali.

The veteran of the field as a nine-year-old, O’Reilly gelding Brave Ali hasn’t raced in 12 months.

Fellow nine-year-old Temple Of Boom is also in the mix, the Group 1 winner in Sydney second-up after a worse than midfield finish crossing seventh with the 59.5kg top weight in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) on November 28.

Last year’s Lough Neagh Stakes winner Big Money came off a win in the George Moore and while this year’s winner of the Group 3, Didntcostalot, isn’t nominated to back-up the second placed Gundy Spirit is.

Gollan’s Jet Spur five-year-old jumped at $31 odds in the George Moore for his second after running fourth in the Keith Noud Stakes and will be out to improve again over the 1350m on Saturday.

He has a good record over the distance (10-4-2-1) and is also a three time winner at the track and distance.

Gollan’s other hopeful is Testa Rossa seven-year-old Fontelina who ran third in the George Moore Stakes last time out in his first top three performance since a narrow second behind stablemate Spirit Of Boom in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in March last year.

Coming off form in Sydney is Gerald Ryan’s visiting Rosehill-based mare Peace Force, the six-year-old boasting winning form at the track having taken out the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) during the winter.

Her last start was a third to Mighty Lucky when beaten only a quarter length at her home track in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) on November 28, form Ryan is hoping stacks up in Queensland.

Other notable nominees include Lynn Tipper’s George Moore fifth placed Feltre and the local Kelly Schweida-trained Monashee Mountain mare Miss Cover Girl after her first win since the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in April.
