Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Black-type racing takes place right around the country this weekend including in Adelaide where South Australia’s Morphettville Racecourse hosts the 2015 City Of Marion Stakes, betting tips for the sprint feature found below.
This year’s edition of the handicap clash runs as the Quayclean Stakes, the $100,000 Listed 1200m clash due to jump as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:47pm (SA time).
A final field of 16 is down to 15 runners after David Jolly scratched his widely-drawn Alabama Missile, markets at Ladbrokes.com.au on the remaining hopefuls led by Lord Aspen ($3.30).
Despite suffering a blow drawing the outside alley, Mick Huxtable’s Good Journey four-year-old is still the one to beat according to the bookies who are taking no chances on the progressive gelding.
He is five-from-eight over his career so far and shoots for his first win since saluting at the track in a Benchmark 90 over the same distance back in September.
Also at single figures to take out the City Of Marion Stakes this summer include the likes of the now Phillip Stokes-trained interstate performer Countryman ($6) having his maiden run at Morphettville, Richard Jolly’s always-honest seven-year-old Karacatis ($7) coming off a Morphettville Parks victory over 1000m and the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Purrealist gelding Baligari ($8).
So will the top fancies in betting be the first over the line or is there an upset City Of Marion Stakes 2015 result on the cards from a double figure hope such as Essay Raider ($10) who returns to racing this weekend not having run since early April?
#4 Karacatis ($7)
One of the older gallopers in this line-up, Jolly’s local Hussonet seven-year-old is still racing in top form proven by his last start win at Adelaide’s other Morphettville track over 1000m a fortnight back. Two weeks between runs is ideal, and he only needs to handle the step up in distance where he has decent form (13-1-4-3) to thrive again. He is yet to win over this track / distance but from eight attempts boasts six minor placings. He also drops a kilo to 58kg and is drawn a treat in barrier five.
#16 Silent Whisper ($13)
Big value on offer for Kennewell’s I Am Invincible four-year-old who is second-up this weekend on the back of a fifth to our top pick for the win, Karacatis, on November 21. He has had four runs at this course for a win and a third, and has winning form up to 1400m meaning the extra 200m this weekend off his last run should see an improvement. Has a wide alley (12) for jockey Jeffrey Maund to overcome, so just needs a touch of luck from the gate.
#12 Lord Aspen ($3.30)
Cannot completely rule out the favourite who even from the wide alley is a notable danger. The up-and-comer is in form and undefeated (2-2-0-0) at this track and distance. He has never been defeated at Morphettville and the fourth last time out in the Murray Bridge Cup carrying 57kg was brave so the drop back to the 54kg minimum here will aid his chances.
