Punters in Brisbane are treated to a double shot of black-type racing action at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday including the milers facing off in the Brisbane Handicap 2015, betting tips for which are found below.
Set to run as Doomben Race 8 at 4:13pm (QLD time), this year’s $100,000 Listed Queensland Bus Industry Council Brisbane Handicap (1640m) has attracted a final field of 14.
Brisbane Handicap betting at Ladbrokes.com.au features four single figure hopes led by the firming $3.20 favourite Traveston Girl who is drawn well in barrier two for jockey Tegan Harrison.
Harrison rode the Flying Spur mare last time out at the track on November 21 for a smart 1.5 length win in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1600m) and with a gun gate, winning form over the distance and getting in on the 54kg the four-year-old could prove hard to beat again.
The next best fancied in the Brisbane Handicap odds this summer include ’s widely-drawn Mossman five-year-old Hopfgarten ($4.80) who will appreciate dropping right back in class after a spring that included two Group 1 runs in Melbourne and the Tony Gollan-trained Northern Meteor five-year-old Best Of The Rest ($7.50) coming off a fourth to Traveston Girl in the Recognition Stakes from an outside alley.
So will one of the runners under $10 get the job done or is there an upset Brisbane Handicap result on the cards from a longer priced hope such as the rails-drawn Landlocked or Shotover River at $10?
#7 Traveston Girl ($3.20)
The favoured mare looks the one to beat on the back of her strong win in the Recognition Stakes at the track and distance a fortnight ago. Gollan’s girl came off a Flemington run and relished being back home with Harrison in the saddle, who retains the ride this weekend. Now she is proven over the mile winning over it again shouldn’t be an issue from a nice barrier two draw on the 54kg light weight.
#12 First Bloom ($18)
Tipping Gollan to dominate this result and like the juicy odds on offer for this six-year-old mare First Bloom. She has form all around the country including a Moonee Valley win over 2040m last time out carrying 58.5kg. She’s going to need to be sharp stepping up into black-type company here over less distance, but at her last run over the 1600m she won (also at MV). Drawn wide (13), jockey Glen Colless has work to do but the drop back in weight and distance could see her surprise.
#6 Shotover River ($10)
If you like the form coming out of the Recognition Stakes you can’t go past local runner-up Shotover River, the Savabeel six-year-old boasting winning form at the Doomben track up to 2220m. He did well off three straight wins over that distance dropping back to the 1600m last time out and can do so again having come up with a good gate six draw and carrying only 54.5kg.
