Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Sydney’s Gerald Ryan is looking forward to the race debut of his promising juvenile Regimental Force at Royal Randwick this Saturday that could lead into a Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2016 run at the Gold Coast in January.
Ryan has a similar two-year-old campaign planned this summer for the promising Sepoy colt to that he followed with former star galloper turned top sire Snitzel.
Snitzel won the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m) on debut in September of 2004 before wins at Wyong, Doomben and then a dead heat for third at the Gold Coast Racecourse in January of 2005 behind Bradbury’s Luck in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic as the beaten odds-on favourite.
Now worth $2 million, this season’s Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) runs on January 9 and is on the agenda for the currently unraced Regimental Force.
The horse’s sire Sepoy won his opening four career starts in 2010-11 and at the time of his retirement won 10 of his 13 starts including the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes, 2011 Golden Slipper, 2011 Manikato Stakes and 2001 Coolmore Stud Stakes in elite level company.
Out to emulate some of that success, Regimental Force has his maiden run under race conditions this weekend at Randwick in a 2YO Plate over 1000m against a field of also unraced youngsters.
The chestnut colt caught the eye with a blistering 9.5 length barrier trial success at Rosehill on November 24 with Brenton Avdulla aboard in the quickest of four hit-outs over 900m for that age group, form Ryan hopes stacks up on Saturday at the races.
“He’s very good,” Ryan told AAP this week.
“Always has been right from the word go.
“Not that I did too much with him early but I just liked the way he did it.
“He’s a good mover with a good attitude.”
After his debut the horse will have his subsequent runs spaced in a similar fashion to that of Snitzel’s including a next-up start in the $150,000 Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Boxing Day.
“He’ll run on Saturday and then all being well he will go the Gold Coast and run on Boxing Day on his way to the Magic Millions,” Ryan confirmed.
“Snitzel won the Strawberry Hill Stud Slipper at Wyong around the same date, then we went to the Tommy Smith Slipper in Queensland which it was known as at the time.”
A run at Wyong doesn’t fit into the campaign of Regimental Force but Ryan believes that actually works in his favour with a long term goal of running in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
“I’ve gone to the Wyong race a couple of times and it hasn’t worked so we’ll go the Snitzel way this time,” Ryan said.
“Plus the money he races for (at Rosehill and the Gold Coast) qualifies you for the Golden Slipper whereas the (restricted) Magic Millions money doesn’t.”
As well as the ace pedigree being a son of Sepoy, Regimental Force’s dam Regimental Gal boasted form that Ryan hopes stacks up for her son having taken out the 2011 Magic Millions Classic.
