Secret Saga Salutes in 2015 Mode Plate

A wide barrier draw proved a non-issue for the Tony Gollan-trained favourite Secret Saga who scored a narrow win in Saturday’s Mode Plate 2015 in Brisbane on George Moore Stakes Day.

Taking her record at Doomben Racecourse to an impressive five wins and a second from eight starts at the track, the Real Saga filly jumped as the $2.80 top favourite in the $100,000 Listed Zetta 1 Mode Plate (1200m) and didn’t disappoint the punters with her gutsy win after being a touch slow to jump.

Coming off a 1050m win at the track over La Dolce Vita, Secret Saga boosted her prize money up over $350,000 beating home the same Bradley Smith-trained filly home in the Mode Plate by a short half-head after finding the front early and holding her position until the line.

She had one and a half lengths to spare over Smith’s Ferocity filly last time out, but over the extra metres in Saturday’s rematch La Dolce Vita ($8) was far harder to defeat after coming with a strong late challenge.

In third finishing off the trifecta still under a length off the winner was the Matthew Dunn-trained Falvelon filly Madotti ($9) with Glen Colless in the saddle.

Ridden by Jim Byrne, Gollan believes Secret Saga only won the Mode Plate narrowly as he might have given her too easy a lead-up into the black-type.

“I blame myself a bit for the narrow margin,” Gollan said post-win on Saturday.

“She just blew out that last little bit and maybe I was a bit easy on her leading into this race. She just did so well between runs and maybe she was a gallop short.”

Byrne however believed Gollan wasn’t to blame, but that she only just won due to her “switching off” in the run.

“That wasn’t the reason for her stopping at the end. She’s fit,” Byrne said.

“She’s so much a better chaser than she is in front. She lets down fast and then idles and switches herself off if there’s nothing to chase.”

Gollan, who also won the day’s feature race with Didntocostalot flying home in a blistering time to win the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m), will give Secret Saga one more summer run in Brisbane before preparing for a Sydney raid in the autumn.

Her next start will be in the Gold Edition in a fortnight back at the track against the boys before a deserved break.

“We will then come back and run in some of the minor races over the Sydney carnival and then aim for the winter carnival,” Gollan said.

“That’s been a successful formula for a lot of horses over the years and I’m sure this filly is going to be a worthy winter contender for us.”
