Dublin Lass Scores for Snowden in 2015 Starlight Stakes

Peter & Paul Snowden’s top fancied mare Dublin Lass enjoyed a tidy win over a small field in the Starlight Stakes 2015 at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday giving her an undefeated record at the Sydney track.

The five-year-old daughter of O’Reilly came off a brave first-up second at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day in the Group 3 G.H. Mumm Stakes (1100m) in the wet and handled a much firmer track on Saturday to win the $100,000 Listed The HQ Of Insurance Starlight Stakes (1100m) over the same distance.

Adding to her gun second-up record that now stands at two wins and two seconds from four attempts, Dublin Lass was the punters’ pick in the Starlight paying $2.50 for the win with Kerrin McEvoy taking over for Blake Shinn in the saddle.

Having won her only other start at Rosehill, the in-form mare made it two from two at the track beating home Jason Coyle’s $20 outsider Freeze The Charges by a half-length.

Dublin Lass tracked the eventual runner-up throughout the race sitting just off the speed before closing the gap in the final stages to draw away and win after being up closer than co-trainer Peter Snowden expected.

“She was probably a bit closer in the run than I expected,” Snowden told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“But she did her job.”

In third a further three quarters of a length back was the Con Karakatsanis-trained Howmuchdoyouloveme ($5.50).

Dublin Lass has now won seven of her 17 career starts for $366,500 in prize money, Snowden confident the mare has more black-type success in her this campaign.

After making the most of the 54kg lightweight for her Starlight success over the weekend, Dublin Lass is being set for the upcoming summer sprints over the next six weeks according to co-trainer Peter Snowden.

“There is a race every two weeks for her in the next six weeks,” Snowden said.

“She is a nice mare and always had good ability. She can keep improving and there are a nice series of races for her coming up and there could be a couple of wins to come.

“She will probably go up a couple of kilos in a fortnight and she will still be very competitive.

“The summer campaign will tell us a lot about her, but she is a nice mare and it will be interesting to see how far she can go.”

Her next start will be in the $100,000 Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Villiers Stakes Day, December 12, before runs in the $100,000 Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) on Boxing Day and Gosford’s Takeover Target Stakes on January 8.

McEvoy was also full of post-win praise for Dublin Lass who he believes can be competitive in the upcoming sprints.

“It looked her race on paper and that’s how it played out,” he said.

“She got a nice trial and produced a good turn of foot when I asked her to go. That won’t be her last win.”
