A bumper 20 early entries were received for this year’s $120,000 Listed Doveton Stakes (1000m), the handicap sprint headlining the racing action in Melbourne on the weekend.

Smerdon has just the one entry in Testa Rossa gelding Reldas who has won two of his past three starts this time in with back-to-back October wins at Moonee Valley.

Last time out he crossed second to Malaguerra at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day over 1400m during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, and if accepted for Saturday’s showdown will be vying for his third win from four starts at the Sandown track.

A super consistent horse that has won six from 17 to date, the Doveton Stakes will also be Reldas’s first stakes assignment.

Also in top form heading into a possible Doveton Stakes run is the Mark Kavanagh-trained Manhattan Rain mare Wild Rain.

The four-year-old has run first or second in her five most recent runs going back to June including her second in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield in the winter.

She also won the Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) in Adelaide in late July and was runner-up on Crown Oaks Day at Flemington behind The Quarterback in the Listed Dilmah Tea Stakes (1000m) on a Heavy (9) track.

Last start she ran second again when beaten just a short half-head after a run from barrier 12 of 15 over 1100m at Ballarat on November 21 in a race won by Murt The Flirt.

There are two last start winners nominated for the Doveton this summer with the Robbie Griffiths-trained Grane who won over 1000m at Moonee Valley just last Saturday and Maasai Justice for Terang’s John McArthur.

Jason Warren’s Written Tycoon gelding Danger Close may be out of form of late having had just the won run since May when fifth first-up over 955m at Moonee Valley on November 13, but if accepted the six-year-old must be considered.

He has had three previous runs over the track and distance for three 1000m Sandown Hillside wins including last year’s Doveton Stakes where Craig Newitt rode him to victory from the inside alley.

Last year’s winning trainer Warren has also nominated for Not A Single Doubt five-year-old Single Days as he shoots for back-to-back wins in Saturday’s feature.

Coming off a run in better company last time out is the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old Java who ran sixth to Famous Seamus in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) at Sandown.

That was the improver’s third run at the track he returns to on Saturday for his first unplaced runs following two previous Hillside victories including in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1300m) over Petrology back in January.

He is also Group 1 performed having run a brave fourth behind Dissident in Caulfield’s CF Orr Stakes in mid-February.

Other notable hopes including Peter Moody’s last start Dilmah Tea Stakes third placegetter Office Bearer, consistent Benalla-based mare Pretty Possum and the Darren Weir-trained Tuscan Sling who has won four of his six starts over the distance.
