2015 Brisbane Handicap Nominations: Four For Gollan

The season’s best Queensland trainer Tony Gollan has four early entries for the feature race at Doomben Racecourse this weekend as he looks to keep the stakes’ wins coming in Saturday’s Brisbane Handicap 2015.

Last weekend Gollan took out both of the black-type features at the track with Secret Saga saluting in the $100,000 Listed Mode Plate (1200m) and fellow favourite Didntcostalot leading an all-Gollan trifecta beating home stablemates Gundy Spirit and Fontelina in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m).

There are two Listed features running at Doomben this Saturday including the $100,000 Brisbane Handicap (1640m), nominations for which have been extended until 9:00am on Tuesday.

The original entries attracted 15 milers including four for Gollan led by Traveston Girl.

A four-year-old daughter of Flying Spur, the in-form mare has won two from seven at the track including her one and a half-length Listed Recognition Stakes (1600m) victory last time out on November 21.

Fourth in the same lead-up was Gollan’s Northern Meteor five-year-old Best Of The Rest who is the first of his three other Brisbane Handicap hopes along with last start Moonee Valley winner over 2040m First Bloom and fellow six-year-old Trakstar whose last start was a ninth to Steel Zip in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) on November 14.

Gollan’s two mares Traveston Girl and First Bloom are the only last start winners nominated for the Brisbane Handicap.

Recognition Stakes runner-up Shotover River is the next best in form, the John, Dan & Chris Meagher-trained son of Savabeel having won his three previous runs at the track on the trot dating back to July 18.

With winning form up to 2220m, the six-year-old gelding was brave in defeat as a 26/1 outsider in Recognition Stakes betting and shoots for his maiden win over less than 1676m if accepted for the rematch on Saturday.

Also coming off a top three run over the mile last time out is Queanbeyan-trained Landlocked, the veteran nine-year-old last seen carrying a hefty 61kg when third to Just A Blur in the Goulburn Cup (1600m) on November 22.

Another of Brisbane’s leading trainers Robert Heathcote has two nominations with his Listed Members’ Handicap (1600m) winner from the winter Bewhatyouwannabe out to atone for a Recognition Stakes 10th and the highest-rated runner in the mix Hopfgarten who hasn’t won a race since late March.

Other notable hopes include Andrew Williamson’s Recognition Stakes sixth placegetter Darci Be Good and Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2020m) winner at the track in May Faust.

The official 2015 Brisbane Handicap field, barriers and weights are out on Wednesday so stay tuned.
