Warwick Farm’s Marc Conners is hoping for a black-type win at Rosehill Gardens this weekend from aptly-named grey Fiftyshadesofgrey in the Starlight Stakes 2015 to help improve the mare’s future value in the breeding barn.
Named after the famous novel, the five-year-old daughter of Written Tycoon is owned by a contingent of women and has already amassed over $260,000 in prize money in a nice return off her $27,000 purchase price.
“At the time everybody was talking about Fifty Shades Of Grey,” Conners told AAP.
“Plus she is a grey horse so it worked.”
This Saturday in Sydney she gets the chance to increase that and her value as a broodmare with a win in the $100,000 Listed The HQ Of Insurance Starlight Stakes (1100m) on Festival Stakes Day.
Running as Race 5 at 3:05pm (AEST) as one of three Listed features on the card, the handicap sprint features a small but quality field of eight hopefuls.
Leading the latest Starlight Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at a firming $2.60 is fellow mare, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained daughter of O’Reilly Dublin Lass.
She is one-from-one at the track and is back in Sydney off a second to Pittsburgh Flyer at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day in the wet when beaten only 0.4 lengths in the Group 3 G.H. Mumm Stakes (1100m) over the same distance.
Fiftyshadesofgrey meanwhile can be found further down the Starlight Stakes betting markets at $10, out from $9, with the in-form James McDonald booked for the ride from a gun barrier three draw.
McDonald partnered her last time out for a win at the track and distance just seven days ago on Saturday when she carried 58kg to a narrow win in a Benchmark 78.
That gave her a trio of Rosehill victories from 14 starts at the track she returns to on the short back-up on the weekend, Fiftyshadesofgrey to appreciate the notable drop in weight back to the 54kg minimum as she steps up in class.
Conners has around 15 to 20 horses in work at the stable and would be thrilled to see the mare put his hard work in the spotlight with an upset Starlight Stakes result.
“No doubt it’s getting harder and we have to try to give clients something the bigger stables can’t,” he said.
“We can be one on one with our horses and our owners.
“Any Saturday-class horses are an important backbone of the stable and she is good to have around.”
The other best fancied Starlight runners this summer are the fellow Snowden-trained That’s A Good Idea ($3.10) with the 60kg top weight and Howmuchdoyouloveme ($5.50) who is another last start winner over the 1100m at Rosehill.
