Mode Plate 2015 Odds: Secret Saga Clear Favourite

In-form local filly Secret Saga is clear favourite in 2015 Mode Stakes betting to make it five from eight at Doomben Racecourse on George Moore Stakes Day this weekend in Brisbane.

The three-year-old daughter of Real Saga has had seven previous runs at the track for four wins and a second, the latest of which saw her post a 1.5 length victory over La Dolce Vita over the 1050m on November 14.

That followed an unplaced Sydney run in black-type company at Randwick behind Counterattack over 1200m, a distance she is back up to at home on Saturday in the $100,000 Listed Zetta 1 Mode Plate (1200m).

A set weights sprint for three-year-old fillies, this year’s Mode Plate field features 16 hopefuls and is set to run as Doomben Race 6 at 3:37pm (AEST) one race before the $200,000 Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) kicks off the Brisbane Summer Racing Series.

Despite a horror barrier 13 of 16 draw, the Tony Gollan-trained Real Saga sits top of the Mode Stakes odds at, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the Group 3 in Brisbane on Saturday, paying $3.50 for the win.

Jockey Jim Byrne retains his association with the up-and-coming favourite and will be doing his best to get her first to the post from the nasty starting position that is the widest she has drawn in her eight career runs so far.

Five other fillies are at single figures in the current Mode Plate betting markets this weekend including equal $8 second fancies Banda Spice and Thorsborne drawn well in barriers two and five respectively.

From the Sunshine Coast, the Stuart Kendrick-trained Show A Heart filly Banda Spice was last seen running third at the track and distance beaten under half a length behind In His Stride from November 7.

She is back against her own kind in the Mode Plate but steps up to black-type class for the first time since a failed 11th behind Flippant here in the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) in early June.

Thorsborne is one of two Sydney raiders prepared by Gerald Ryan who Jeff Lloyd is booked to ride in the daughter of Hinchinbrook’s first start in Queensland.

She was unplaced and beaten nearly five lengths at Canterbury earlier in the month and has been up over 1200m twice before for a third at that same track in September and a well-beaten 11th to Speak Fondly at Rosehill in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) in mid-March.

Ryan’s other Mode Plate hope this weekend is a $21 outsider in betting, Edge Away still a maiden from seven assignments around Sydney that have produced five seconds and a third in non-black type company.

Rounding out the hopes under $10 for the win are then Madotti ($8.50), the rails-drawn Typing ($9) and Riapinka ($9).

Murwillumbah’s Matthew Dunn trains Falvelon filly Madotti who has had six Doomben starts to date including a Group 2 run during the winter.

Fourth in the Lancaster Stakes last time out, her latest of two runs this campaign was a brave third beaten only 0.6 lengths by Shadow Lawn over 1100m at the end of October at Doomben.

Typing is Kendrick’s second acceptor and the nicely-bred daughter of Sebring gets the run of the race from barrier one.

She took out Toowoomba’s Listed Dalrello Stakes (1200m) in early May before a credible fifth finishing just over two lengths off the winner Look To The Stars in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) next run.

Her last start though was a 10th on June 6 when unplaced behind the Chris Waller-trained Press Statement in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m), the shorter distance and lower class first-up here to suit.

The other $9 hope is a visiting Sydney-trained Bel Esprit filly, Riapinka prepared at Newcastle by Kris Lees.

She won at Wyong at her third start in October and comes off a Crown Oaks Day run at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival when fifth to Secret Agenda in the Group 3 Red Roses (1100m) from November 5.
