Barrier Woes for Gollan in 2015 Mode Plate

Brisbane Trainers’ Premiership leading horseman Tony Gollan is confident he has top fancy Secret Saga spot on for her Mode Plate 2015 run at Doomben this weekend but admits the wide gate is a worry for the smart filly.

Gollan saddles-up two of the 16 fillies in the mix for Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Zeta 1 Mode Plate (1200m) on George Moore Stakes Day with Suite Mover and Secret Saga drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers three and 13 respectively.

The best fancied of the two and the entire field of three-year-old fillies is Gollan’s well performed daughter of Real Saga, Secret Saga sitting top of the Mode Stakes odds at $3.50 through Ladbrokes.com.au – home of Best Tote or SP + 20% on Saturday’s George Moore Stakes at the meeting.

A winner of four of her eight career runs so far she is four-from-seven at Doomben and comes off a 1050m win at the track by 1.5 lengths a fortnight ago.

She has the right lead-up, form at the course and the class to deserve her favouritism with the only blow being the horror gate.

Jim Byrne stays aboard Saturday’s favourite but has his work cut out from him in barrier 13.

While definitely shaping up as hard to beat over the suitable distance, Secret Saga will need luck in the run according to Gollan who spoke to Racenet this week.

“The wide barrier is the big worry for Secret Saga,” Gollan said.

“You need luck going into that first corner or the race can be all over.

“But in saying that the set weights is in her favour and she’s versatile.”

Her longer priced stablemate meanwhile is drawn a treat for just her third career run.

Gollan’s Jet Spur filly Suite Mover has had two starts at Ipswich and broke her maiden status on November 11 over 1100m with a 1.3 length success from the inside alley.

She is drawn only two wider from the fence for her Doomben and black-type debut on Saturday and pays a juicy $18 in the latest Mode Plate betting markets with Tegan Harrison retaining her association with the up-and-comer.

“Suite Mover is better than a Class 1 filly which is what she’s eligible for,” her trainer said.

“This is a big step up but she’s promising.”

Following Secret Saga in the markets are the likes of the Stuart Kendrick-trained Show A Heart chestnut Banda Spice ($8) in barrier two, early market mover Thorsborne ($11 into $8) for Sydney’s Gerald Ryan and Madotti ($8.50) lining up at the track for the seventh time.
