Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Five stablemates from the top Queensland stables of Tony Gollan headline the line-up in Saturday’s Doomben feature with the George Moore Stakes 2015 opening the Brisbane Summer Sprint Series Triple Crown.
Set to run as Doomben Race 7 at 4:17pm (local time), this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Channel 7 George Moore Stakes (1200m) has attracted a dozen gallopers led by Gollan’s Group 1 winner Temple Of Boom.
Carrying the 59.5kg top weight in the handicap sprint, the veteran Piccolo nine-year-old is best known for his 2012 win in Randwick’s Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).
Despite his class Temple Of Boom has won just the one race since back in April last year in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm.
First-up this campaign he ran a nice third just a length off Burbero in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) in Sydney before things went amiss last time out on August 29 at Caulfield when second last running 14th behind Boban in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
This weekend following a freshen-up the $1.9 million earner is back home in Brisbane shooting for his maiden Doomben win at his 13th start at the track, jumping from a nice barrier three draw.
Coming up trumps with the inside run from barrier one is the fellow Gollan-trained Fontelina who is also the next heaviest weighted hope with 58kg.
Like Temple Of Boom, the Testa Rossa gelding’s last start was in Melbourne on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington from October 31 when ninth to Éclair Choice in the Group 2 tab.com.au Stakes (1200m).
Gollan’s third runner on Saturday in the Group 3 is the in-form Didntcostalot shooting for his fourth win from five starts from gate five carrying 55kg.
Another seven-year-old, the Danerich gelding has excellent Doomben form with three wins, a second and a third from his five previous runs at the track including an 1100m success late last month by 2.3 lengths carrying two kilos more than his Saturday allocation.
Gollan has also accepted for Gundy Spirit who comes off a fourth in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) from November 14 at the track and Choisir gelding Casual Choice drawn in barriers seven and 11 respectively.
The only other acceptor weighted above the 54kg minimum is the Sherrie Lawlor-trained local Bel Esprit five-year-old Architect (54.5kg) who was last seen running third to Didntcostalot on October 31 with 58kg on his back.
The gelding, who lines-up for his 52nd career start on Saturday, trialled at Deagon on November 17 for a second behind the well-performed Miss Cover Girl and Robbie Fradd is booked for the ride.
Winner of that trial, Kelly Schweida’s Monashee Mountain mare Miss Cover Girl is also engaged for the George Moore Stakes this summer in her 10th Doomben run.
She has a good record at the track (9-2-2-2) and was last seen running third to Nayeli in Randwick’s Group 3 Nivison Stakes (1200m) on October 17.
A three-time winner over the distance, she drops two kilos from her latest run with Glen Colless retaining the ride but has the outside barrier (12) to overcome as she shoots for her first victory under race conditions since the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) in Sydney back on April 6.
Along with Didntcostalot the only other last start winner in the mix is the Doug Roberts-trained Charge Account drawn nicely in barrier four for the Charge Forward six-year-old’s first black-type run since back in March of 2013.
He won over the track and distance by nearly three lengths carrying 56.5kg on November 7 and while up in class looks a livewire chance to continue his good 1200m record at Doomben (3-2-0-1) on the weekend.
Other notable George Moore Stakes hopes this season include Feltre coming off a second to Charge Account here from the start of the month and Keith Noud Stakes runner-up a fortnight ago Top Tone.
