Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A small field is set to face off in the first of three black-type features on Festival Stakes Day at Rosehill Racecourse this weekend including Bring Luck who shoots for back-to-back wins at the track.
Due to run as Rosehill Race 2 at 1:20pm (AEST) on Saturday, this year’s $100,000 Listed Tyrell Stud ATC Cup (2000m) field features just seven final acceptors.
Getting in on the 54kg minimum with Peter Wells to ride from barrier five is the Amanda Turner & Mauro Poletti-trained Sebring four-year-old Bring Luck making his black-type debut.
The gelding was last seen beating home a similar class field over 1900m at Rosehill on November 14 by a tidy two and a half lengths carrying the same weight with the same hoop aboard for the November Topaz.
Third placegetter in the same lead-up race was Chris Waller’s Commands five-year-old Vilanova who is out to turn the tables this weekend.
Shooting for his first win since the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) from May in 2014, following which he ran third to Sonntag in that year’s Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m), Vilanova was beaten five lengths with 56kg on his back in the November Topaz.
He drops notably to 54.5kg for the weekend’s rematch, Kerrin McEvoy booked for the ride.
Waller has a total of three ATC Cup hopefuls this season with Vilanova joined by stablemates Instrumentalist and Telepathic.
In gate six with Joshua Parr retaining the ride is 58kg top weight Instrumentalist, the Amadeus Wolf gelding drops a half-kilo from his weight in the November Handicap at the track from a fortnight ago when crossing a disappointing and well-beaten last (8th, 12.7 lengths) behind Saturday’s Festival Stakes hopeful Zanbagh.
Telepathic meanwhile is another 54kg lightweight on the weekend, the former New Zealand-trained mare coming off three top three runs this time in including the Mossman five-year-old’s victory at the track with 59.5kg on her back from two weeks ago.
Carrying 54.5kg this weekend from gate two with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle is the Anthony Cummings-trained Savabeel gelding Best Case who ran fourth in the November Topaz beaten over 10 lengths with two kilos extra.
Also fourth last time out was Wayne Carroll’s Wagga Wagga-trained Mossman eight-year-old Grand Allowance who was four lengths off the Snake Gully Cup winner over 1400m.
Rounding out this year’s ATC Cup field is then Adelaide raider Lucky Lucky Lucky, the Tony McEvoy-trained six-year-old fifth in the November Topaz that produces the bulk of Saturday’s runners.
