Starlight Stakes hope The Monstar on Winter Carnival trial

Albury trainer Brett Cavanough will head back to Sydney with The Monstar who has three runs in Melbourne during the Spring Carnival.

Cavanough was pleased with the results from the five year old who ran second to Sabatini in an 1100m Caulfield Handicap on September 26 followed by a fourth to Alpha Miss in the Group 2 $200,000 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on October 10 and then rounded off his Melbourne campaign with a third to Sea Lord in the Listed $150,000 MSS Security Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

“He has climbed to a whole new level for me this preparation,” Cavanough told AAP.

“There wasn’t a superstar among the horses he raced against except for Lankan Rupee in the Schillaci and he was injured.

“He performed so well and I think he is even better right-handed.

“I really want to see him over 1400 metres on a wet track and we have the Queensland winter as a long-term goal but he’s ready to go to the races again right now so we will come to Sydney and then give him a break over Christmas.”

Melbourne jockey Daniel Stackhouse was aboard The Monstar at his latest start at Flemington but regular rider Richard Bensley will be back in the saddle on Saturday.

“Richard knows my horses and I don’t have to tell him what to do so I’m happy he will come to Rosehill,” Cavanough said.

The Monstar is one of sixteen sprinters nominated for the Starlight Stakes.

Peter and Paul Snowden have nominated Dublin Lass and That’s A Good Idea with the latter also entered for the Group 3 $200,000 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Howmuchdoyouloveme was back in the winner’s list last start with a first up win in an 1100m BenchMark 93 Handicap at Rosehill on November 14 and trainer Con Karakatsanis has entered him for the Starlight Stakes.

Gai Waterhlouse has nominated Echo Gal for the Starlight Stakes, Peter Moody’s only entrant is Office Bearer and the Marc Conners trained last start winner Fiftyshadesofgrey is also among the nominations.
