Tony Gollan’s Group 1 winning sprinter Temple Of Boom headlines nominations taken for the feature race in Brisbane at Doomben Racecourse this weekend – the George Moore Stakes 2015.
Won last year by Sydney visitor Big Money, this year’s edition of the $200,000 Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) attracted 19 early entries with the handicap clash having a field limit of 16 starters.
Locally trained at Eagle Farm, veteran Piccolo nine-year-old Temple Of Boom is a $1.9 million earner and proven elite level winner in Sydney having won the 2012 The Galaxy.
Since then however he has won just one other race with success in last year’s Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) over half-brother Spirit Of Boom.
He has had two runs this time in for differing results.
The first was a nice third in the Group 2 Missle Stakes (1200m) at Randwick before a second last when 14th to Boban in Caulfield’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in late August in Melbourne.
Gollan could give the warhorse the chance to return to form back in Brisbane with a 13th start at Doomben, Temple Of Boom shooting for his first win at the track.
Also nominated by Gollan for the George Moore this year are five of Temple Of Boom’s stablemates.
The stable’s other entries are Choisir gelding Casual Choice, last start winner at the track over 1100m Didntcostalot, Group 1 performed Fontelina, Gundy Spirit coming off a fourth in the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) at Doomben on November 14 and fifth in the same lead-up race Whiskey Allround.
The best past the post behind winner Steel Zip in the Keith Noud nominated for a George Moore Stakes back-up this weekend is the Lorraine Erhart-trained runner-up Top Tone.
A four-year-old son of Clang, Top Tone had his seventh Doomben run a fortnight ago this Saturday in the black-type and was narrowly denied his maiden win at the track beaten a short half-head.
Keith Noud Handicap third placegetter Saluter is also in the mix for a George Moore start on the weekend, the Commands six-year-old prepared by Robert Heathcote whose stable star Buffering won his sixth Group 1 and second Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot in Perth over the weekend.
The highest-rated of the George Moore Stakes nominations this year out to go back-to-back in the race for the Sydney visitors is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained That’s A Good Idea.
Flying Spur six-year-old That’s A Good Idea was last seen running second in a 1100m Listed sprint at Randwick on October 17 and is also nominated for the Listed Starlight Stakes at home at Rosehill this Saturday.
Another well performed entry is local Monashee Mountain mare Miss Cover Girl.
Prepared by Kelly Schweida, the four-year-old has won seven of her 16 starts so far most recently the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) in the wet at Randwick back in April.
Since then she’s run well in a string of races including her Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) sixth over the Doomben mile during the winter and her last start third to Nayeli in the Group 3 Nivision Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 17.
Miss Cover Girl also won her latest trial on November 17 at Deagon over 800m beating fellow George Moore nominee Architect.
Other notable George Moore Stakes nominees include the in-form Architect set to line-up next start for his 52nd career run and dual winner at the track and distance Charge Account.
