Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The 2015 Winterbottom Stakes runs on Railway Stakes Day at Ascot Racecourse on the weekend, betting tips for the Perth sprint feature found below.
There are 16 in the mix for this year’s weight-for-age $1 million Group 1 Crown Perth Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), the favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au being Robert Heathcote’s 2013 winner Buffering ($4).
A five-time Group 1 winner, the Brisbane-trained Mossman eight-year-old took out the Winterbottom two years ago and is looking to become the first of his age to win in over 30 years.
Two nine-year-olds have saluted in the Winterbottom Stakes in recent years however with Takeover Target (2008) and Hadabeclorka (2010).
Buffering won back-to-back Melbourne Group 1s before his Perth win in 2013 and this season he ran fourth last time out beaten only a half-length in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 7.
Four other hopefuls are under $10 for the win on Saturday including Manikato Stakes fourth placed Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($5.50) from Melbourne and the local Daniel Morton-trained Watermans Bay ($7.50) coming off a second over 1100m at the track.
So will the best in betting be best over the line or is there value further down the Winterbottom Stakes odds from the likes of the reigning champion Magnifisio ($8) with a wide draw to overcome, the returning Blackfriars seven-year-old Shining Knight ($11) or Silverstream ($11) shooting for four straight wins?
#1 Buffering ($4)
Heathcote’s evergreen warhorse looks hard to beat in a race he won in 2013 on the back of some strong Melbourne Group 1 form once again. Damian Browne retains the ride on the 49-start veteran who is an 11-time winner over the distance and boasts five elite level wins for over $5.2 million in career prize money. Is drawn well in barrier nine and WFA suits, has form around the best sprinters out there and is a gutsy galloper who knows where the line is.
#3 Watermans Bay ($7.50)
The best fancied of the Perth locals, this seven-year-old has a strong record at the track / distance (14-4-5-1) and should be fit second-up after a Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) second to Rock Magic last time out on November 3. Steven Arnold jumps aboard here for the first time since guiding the $1 million earner to victory over 1400m in Group 3 company in Melbourne back in April. Third to Buffering in 2013, he also was runner-up to Magnifisio 12 months ago beaten just a quarter-length so another placing doesn’t look out of order.
#17e Silverstream ($11)
Grant Williams’s in-form Al Maher mare comes off three straight Perth wins in non-black type company and gets the chance to thrive in better company here after getting a start as the sole emergency after the early scratching from the field. She is three-from-four over the distance and is only lightly-raced, the four-year-old winning five of her eight starts to date. Her last foray into stakes company was a 10th to Delicacy in the Group 3 WA Champion Stakes (1600m) last November, but over less distance she could be set to improve.
